Utah!

Our chicken coop saga began back in June. We had sold our house and moved out on 7/6 but we needed a place to keep the coop until we got into our new house (just moved here 9/28). The plan was to take it to my in laws with us, but that was a ridiculous idea because our coop is a beast. There was no way we'd be able to get it down their hill. So we had to think fast, we made a couple inquiries but weren't able to figure anything out. Finally a guy that my husband works with said that his backyard was unfinished and we could keep the chickens there (in Lehi, we live in Eagle Mountain) because they've wanted chickens and they could try them out for a while.

With that figured out we needed to get the coop out of our backyard and into theirs. We ended up hiring a crane. He weighed it while it was up in the air...it weighed 1800 pounds!! So the chickens lived in Lehi over the summer. We moved to our new house and Monday the crane came back and lifted it from their yard, and then my husband pulled it behind a borrowed truck to our new house and this is where it will stay forever. We don't plan on moving ever again, but if we do the coop will stay! :) It was such an ordeal catching the chickens by myself the first time we moved the coop. I would catch one, put it in a box and when I tried to put the next one in the first would jump out! I'm sure I could have sold tickets to the comedy! :)

We did lose our speckled sussex (boom lacka lacka) over the summer, she was our favorite hen. I'm not sure what happened. I went to check on the chickens one day and Boom Lacka Lacka was dead in the nesting box. She had been gone for a little while so I have no idea what happened. Some sort of disease? Maybe she was broody and didn't get out for water and got dehydrated? I'm not sure, it was a sad loss but the rest of the ladies are okay.

In the spring we will have had the ladies for 2 years so we'll add some new chicks to increase the laying that will likely be slowing by then. We are so glad to be settled in our new house and I'm so happy to have our ladies back! :)

Wow! A crane! That must be some hen house to go through all of that for. ;) Glad you got everything settled. And, sorry about your loss of a favorite girl. :(
Yes, you will have to get some more pullets if you can find them in the spring, then you won't have to wait so long for more eggs. Ask me when it's time, I know a few folks around here that may have some. I don't think I will, I am done hatching for the winter. I am hatching the small birds for my last hatch, so unless you want diet sized eggs, then I may have some pullets for you.

ah ha you have the Serama bug

I have fallen in love with these little stinks. And, Like I said, my DH thinks they are really cute too. Something to keep me busy during the winter, deciding on which ones to keep for a while, then hopefully, I will have some laying in the spring...that are fertile. I have to find a nice quiet rooster or two.

I think in the spring we will get baby chicks again, the kids really love getting babies. Heck, I like it too! I'm trying to narrow it down to which breeds we want to add. I think leghorn for the awesome egg production, I would love a legbar for the blue eggs, a Marans (or Barnvelder) for the dark eggs, then two more to fill out the flock. The thing I love about Legbars is the auto-sexing. I would still love a BLRW just for the beautiful feathers, and maybe a true Australorp this time, last time we got an "australorp" from CAL Ranch which is very obviously a black sex link. My husband is Aussie so it just seems fitting. And and and...where can you draw the line with which breeds you want? :) I know we won't be getting another BO, she has not been a nice chicken. And neither has our BSL.

The coop isn't that big, just really well built. It cost much much less (in time and money) to hire the crane twice than to rebuild.

Maybe in the spring you'll be hatching something I want Cynthia, you always hatch fun breeds. I'd love to hatch myself...I'm just afraid I would become addicted like many people on this thread...not naming any names though. ;)

It's funny, my husband suggested that when we moved here we'd probably have to add a second coop...he may be right. We now have .6 acres and so much more space for the birds. My plan is to have the coop on the side of the house and put all the fruit trees in with them so they will have shade in the summer and have a really large area to scratch around in.

Hey! That is not a GSL....that is a whole 'nother chickin! ? My GSL's that hatched male were all white...were mine just weird?

Actually, maybe mine were just weird. Was this one from a Delaware mom? That would explain the black maybe?
ya I'm really confused lol. When I google gold sex-link rooster it looks quite a bit like one. It came from ideal hatchery with some darker sexlinks. That chickens sure has me baffled lol.

I think this is such a pretty bird. I'm with Lisa..I think that something was thrown into that box, that is not what they said it was. This one did come from Ideal..right? It was the most white of the sexlinks..at least what we thought was sexlinks>lol.. Very pretty, may not be smart, but very pretty. Is this the one that goes in circles when you pet it? I
LL
love this photo too.
yes this is the one that walks in circles when you pet it lol. You reallu think its looking girly?

Cuteness!

I've been told that they change in color as they grow..and was told, don't go by their color now. :)

Thank you for youe input guys! Lisa, red and cynthia This is the gold sex-link in question. Sorry the pictures aren't that great.

Brian, its time to face the truth. He is a rooster. It is a sex link not sure of the mix. The hen was probable a white rock or Delaware. If i was you i would at least keep him for Sunday dinner guest.

My little bantam RIR hen is broody and has been for a little over a month. Does anyone have any fresh new chicks they dont want? I really dont want to spend any money on them since i dont plan on keeping them. I could even give the chicks back after she has raised them. They would have to be very newly hatched or she might not take them. Eggs close to lock down would even work. I dont plan on hatching my eggs until spring so i need her raising chicks now so she is ready for spring.
