Utah!

Cynthia, I'll call you.

Brian, cute pictures! I love that last one.

Hey, is anyone here on GoodReads? If you are and don't mind networking, please PM me? I just got a profile set up over there.

What breeds have you guys found to be the best layers? Especially through winter. I don't give my ladies supplemental light (and I don't want to) so I know they will naturally slow down anyway. I would just like SOME eggs over winter. Last year we didn't get any from 8 chickens (Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, 2 EE, Welsummer, BSL, Barred Rock and Exchequer Leghorn) from December through February. Is that normal? I'm all for giving them a break and being more "natural" in their care...it would just be nice to have some eggs. Especially since they lived somewhere else all summer so we haven't really had any fresh eggs since late June.

Leghorns! ha ha..everyone on here knows how I love my leghorns. And, of course the RIR, and..I love love the red or buff sex link for eggs. I wouldn't be surprised if they laid through the winter, even if they slow down, bet these would still lay some.

I figured I will get a leghorn or 2 In the spring. I was thinking RIR, but the reviews I've read said they aren't very nice? Maybe you'll hatch some heritage RIR in the spring Cynthia? And some SBEL and leg bars? Although doesn't someone here have legbars? My kids want to try incubation this spring and with legbars we'd know the gender right away. My RIR's are sweethearts. So are my leghorns. The RIR's didn't want to have anything to do with me until they started laying, now, they eat out of my hands.

A RIR and a Leghorn at my back door, wanting their treats for the day. They click their toes on the
metal of the door frame. My younger leghorn has gotten real good at this. :)

BSL's are also good through the winter. They do slow down, of course, but the one we had through last winter was one of the few who laid without a light. And her egg size didn't really suffer. You just have to make sure you get the eggs before they freeze

the rir's I've had have been my nicest birds. I would recommend them. They were the birds that would come run up to me and say hi first. I've heard salmon faverolles lay throughout the winter. I have one so we will see. I've heard good things about australorps as well. I would have one if I didn't have so many chickens lol.

Thanks for the bantam RIR's gary! I already love them. They got brave enough to eat treats out of my hand:) I have a bunch of other bantams they will soon get acclimated with.

Kimmypie, I have lebars, but unfortunately, my only legbar rooster died, so I can't breed them. I think come Feb/March, I'll be looking to get a new legbar rooster. If one fell into my lap sooner, I'd definitely take him on, but I am not going to actively look for a while.

RIR: I have had two. One was given to me because she was such a terror in my neighbor's flock that she didn't want her anymore. She initially did ok. Then, my entire flock was killed by raccoons, save her. So, I gave her back to the neighbor. The next spring when I had chickens again, I took her back, and she was AWFUL so I got rid of her. I have another RIR now; she'll be 2 in January. She's been a sweet, unassuming bird.
