Utah!

Hey all! Still new to the chicken thing. Had then since about July-ish.

I got a few from Lisa in September and they are all doing pretty well. I lost my Little Bird (The sicky Chicky) to an animal of sorts.... I was hoping she would die peacefully. But it as a bad deal. She was my first Chick lost and I cried. A Lot. Like Ugly Cried!

My other six are doing great though! We have 6x10 dog run with their coop inside of it. We live at the mouth of the Weber Canyon so we get a lot of wind. The run is tarped on Three sides. And inside he coop we have a lamp to keep them warm. However, they have decided to stay under the coop so we have hay around the bottom to keep the wind and cold out.

It has been really cold up here. (-17 with the wind during the last cold spell).... resorted to buying the heated waterer.  $40 bucks! YEEEEKS!!!! But it saves me from hauling water out there 3 times a day. It would literally freeze after 2-3 hours.

We have found that we have one ROOSTER! Yeeeps! I don't know what I am supposed to do with him?!?!? We were supposed to be a HEN ONLY House, but this sucker caught me by surprise today with his loud voice! He sang for about 30 minutes straight!!!

I am looking to add some new chickens, but we have found we do much better with 6-8 weeks and up. If you know of anyone looking for homes.

And a Silkie Hen would make my dreams come true!!!! (Anyone?)

Just an update. I love reading all of your stories. Sorry for the losses some of you have faced with the cold. I fear the rest of the winter as it has just started. :-(

Best of luck and Best Wishes!!!!

Happy Christmas to all!

Erica

Hope you don't mind I re-posted those pictures you sent me, so cute! Glad they are all doing well, My son was very attached to Ruby (Rudy) and was really glad to hear she is still around. Glad you posted! Merry Christmas to you too

Ruby is our best "layer". She is an almost every day girl. Soft Green Blue eggs.
The other girls are kind of hanging out and letting the winter play out. But I know 2 of my hens are at the point where they are done laying. But I like them. I do hope Winter ends soon enough so they can get out and play more.

I love that my dog (A Golden Retriever) loves to hang out with the chickens. No really, he runs up to them now and they don't run away. Probably cause he loves sniffing them and rolling in their poo! ew!

And l love spending time raking out the coop and hanging with them. YIKES! I am my local "Crazy Chicken/Cat Lady!"

Cynthia, I am so glad you've sold all of your golden babies. I'd totally want to buy one, but I really shouldn't until I move into a bigger house. So thank you for removing the temptation. Your black babies are awfully cute though, so I'd appreciate it if you'd hurry and sell them too.

Sundance, it was so good seeing you. I'm going to miss you while you're out of town, but I'm so glad you're escaping this icky air. Congrats on the chukar egg.

Madchicken, I LOVE seeing the babies you got from me. Your favorite looks like she definitely is either half legbar or half polish. They are so beautiful though!!! I'd love to see more pics. Most look like they're half fbcm. The more I study your favorite, the more I'm convinced she is half golden laced polish. I like the concept of hunting mushrooms, but I don't like eating them.

One of my old high school friends had a barred rock start showing up at his house. Nobody around him has any idea where she came from. If she's still around, he's going to take her to work Tuesday, and give her to my dh, who will bring her home. Kind of exciting!

Oh my golly, I love that second little pullet! Beauuuutiful colors!

Madchicken, congratulations on the new family member! Sooo cute. What a sweet little face. December is a good month to be born

Cynthia, your puppies are darling. I had to show my mom.

Sundance, your babies are doing alright

I've got the space heater out there blowing warm air on their box until we get the wall furnace serviced. I gave them some nice, warm water in their bottle, too. They may just get a hot pad to sleep on tonight, as well..........I REALLY want to make sure they're okay.

So, I let the Icelandics out for a while today, and I heard a ruckus out in the driveway. I got up and ran out there to see what was wrong. Well, it turned out that Nora (Chuck Norris) had decided she was going to lay an egg. In a nest she's been hiding from me. Little twit.

Chuck Norris is so cool, she lays her eggs in ice.................

Haven't sold all of them yet..still have some black ones left. They are getting so cute. Starting to walk. Eyes open, they can hear. Starting to bark. Play! I couldn't believe how a couple of them started to play today. Slow motion play, but they were playing.

Well, they've been refrigerated for you all along.

does anyone go hunting for mushrooms? I have been wanting to do this for a long time but am afraid of picking the wrong type and getting really sick or worse. I spend a lot of time in the outdoors and have seen big groups mushrooms.
you should contact biocentric bros, they are a local mushroom farm that also sells kits to grow your own at home. but they are highly knowledgeable on mushrooms and are very helpful people and i am sure could advise you on the subject. look em up on facebook. and you are very smart for not going out with out some guidance on the subject :)

Erica, I too live in Weber county. I bought the heater for water and love it. Saves me a ton of money and water. I love mine. I had to put a heat lamp in with mine. I think I will be losing a few though. Two of my RIR look sick. They have lost a lot of their feathers and have white stuff on them. I don't know what it is. Melissa

Melisa, how old are your RIR's? Could they be molting?

Well, it's not really news to anyone here, but I have officially upgraded from "girlfriend" to "fiancee" status. It will probably be at least a month before things are taken care of and we can move on, but it's progress. Fiancee may not be able to appeal, because of how bad the whole court case went. It's just messy. He may end up having to declare bankruptcy. We'll see.
