Hey all! Still new to the chicken thing. Had then since about July-ish.
I got a few from Lisa in September and they are all doing pretty well. I lost my Little Bird (The sicky Chicky) to an animal of sorts.... I was hoping she would die peacefully. But it as a bad deal. She was my first Chick lost and I cried. A Lot. Like Ugly Cried!
My other six are doing great though! We have 6x10 dog run with their coop inside of it. We live at the mouth of the Weber Canyon so we get a lot of wind. The run is tarped on Three sides. And inside he coop we have a lamp to keep them warm. However, they have decided to stay under the coop so we have hay around the bottom to keep the wind and cold out.
It has been really cold up here. (-17 with the wind during the last cold spell).... resorted to buying the heated waterer. $40 bucks! YEEEEKS!!!! But it saves me from hauling water out there 3 times a day. It would literally freeze after 2-3 hours.
We have found that we have one ROOSTER! Yeeeps! I don't know what I am supposed to do with him?!?!? We were supposed to be a HEN ONLY House, but this sucker caught me by surprise today with his loud voice! He sang for about 30 minutes straight!!!
I am looking to add some new chickens, but we have found we do much better with 6-8 weeks and up. If you know of anyone looking for homes.
And a Silkie Hen would make my dreams come true!!!! (Anyone?)
Just an update. I love reading all of your stories. Sorry for the losses some of you have faced with the cold. I fear the rest of the winter as it has just started. :-(
Best of luck and Best Wishes!!!!
Happy Christmas to all!
Erica
