Utah!

Red, that is so frustrating. I guess now that the court stuff is mostly over, she needs a new hobby, and it's you! Yay!

Silly, I have heard of people putting bottles of water in their incubators to make the temperature more steady. Makes a lot of sense to me. If I was using a still air, I'd seriously consider it. Good luck with your first hatch!

so we are at 52 hours of the incubator being up and running. And its frustrating the crap out of me. Yesterday it had the spike up to 102, so I adjusted, it stayed stable for a few hours, but then everyone said to add humidity, so I added water, dropped the temp down to 99, but it went stabilized back up to the 101. The humidity last night before going to bed was at 28%, this morning it was at 16%, so added more water, but now since I added, warm water. I also added the 2 bottles of water since several threads said this helps keep the temp stable during candling and turning the eggs.

After several hours we are up to 22% humidity, I did move the temp gauges when I put in the water bottles, well they are really 8 oz mason jars. But now since I moved the temp. one is in one top corner the other is in the bottom corner. One says 100, the other says 102.

So now what. I was hoping to set them tonight. But crap, I can't get this cheapo to regulate for the life of me, and I'm sure it will spike again with the house getting warmer today. But I really have no where else to put it where the cat or the dogs won't knock it, and as it is, I'm trying to keep the 5 year old from touching it all day long, and there aren't even eggs in there, she just wants to tell me what the digital temp says.

Someone shoot me now.

UPDATE~~~I decided to stick it down stairs on my desk. So shoot me know, hopefully the kids and the cat leave it alone, but its the only place in the house with a steady temp. Its always about 70, there are no windows anywhere. Lets see how it does here.

Good idea to put it downstairs Karen. Also--a wet cloth or piece of sponge may keep the humidity more steady than the water channels. And don't worry so much about spikes, just remember too high does more damage than too low. It can fluctuate during the day from 98-101 and they should be ok. Just stay away from the 102+ mark. It is the average temperature that is the most important, it will definitely fluctuate up and down.

Got to say hi to Madchicken today and drop off some Serama eggs

Hope they do well for your broody, Gary.

Karen, that was my main frustration with an incubator - constant temp and humidity spikes, even when I had it in a room where the temperature was steady. Good luck!

Well, I have some sad news today. It looks like we're going to have to put down the gimpy rooster my mom loves so much. I don't know if his neck has gotten worse over the last little while or he has some brain damage, but he can't even lift his head up anymore. It's always tucked under him and he twitches a lot. Poor guy is having a hard time eating and getting water, too. At this point I think it would be kindest just to send him on to the next life. He's made it for a year and a half and sired a couple of beautiful pullets, though, so at least we got to enjoy him here for a while.

Thanks Lisa, I feel much better with it downstairs as far as the room temp. Its a stable room. But I'm just worried about my kids getting into it or the stupid 20 year old cat. The stupid cat loved to sleep on top of the brooder, My brooder is just a home made one out of an XXLarge wire crate with a plastic crate on the inside. I did this so they were 100% save from the cat and the dogs, and that is where the cat lived for months.

I just checked after a few hours of the move. I did place the plugs in for it to get back up faster. And its at 32% at 100.2. So I just removed the plugs. Lets see how it goes. I was hoping to set them today. But I guess if I can always wait till tomorrow.

You know if you want to set them I sure would go ahead....really you are pretty ready. Just watch for it to spike up if you need to adjust it down a teensy bit after it heats back up. The eggs will bring it way down, and it takes a while to get it back up, just keep a close eye on it, by bedtime it should be back up to where you know if it is too warm and needs a tiny adjustment. ;)

Well I took the plugs out like suggested in the thread you sent me. The temp. held but the humidity went down to 22%. I guess I need to get a sponge or something for in there.

Oh red I am sorry that rooster was a doll. I hope the Serama eggs are fertile. My sixxle hen buzzard has decided to be broody. What a pain that is since I'm leaving Saturday afternoon after going to the gun show to get some ammo.

I had the same problem with that incubator I bought from IFA thats why I bought the Hovabator as its temp set is automatic and I never had to worry about it

That's what I do :)
