Utah!

Good grief, you'd think someone was getting murdered in my yard! Two of my pullets must be gearing up to lay, because they keep going and setting somewhere for a moment, then freaking out and start singing the egg song. No eggs yet, but every few minutes I can hear one of them out there. Thank goodness most of the neighbors are at work.....

So, here's my shameless plug, but if anyone here who's into gardening would like to take a look, I started a blog. It's where I'm unloading a lot of my thoughts and energy on plants, for now. I figured it would be more appropriate than filling up this thread with my rambling

Oh, Sundance wanted me to mention to everyone that she's having a great time. They went to the mountains to look for gold, but she couldn't walk very far before she needed to stop.

And YAY! One of my noisy pullets laid a big, pale brown egg!

Glad to hear that Sundance is doing well/having fun.

And, ha..I'll bet that hen felt like she was being killed if it was her first egg. Big ey? ;)

Yeah on new egg layer, I got 6 light tan/brown eggs today. I need some color! But at least they are starting to lay again.

I'm glad Sundance is having fun. My husband leaves tomorrow to go to southern California. So jealous, he's staying with my grandparents for 4 days in the nice 80s weather.

So I swear, I have to be the worse person with incubation. So last night I went to bed, humidity was at 58%, this morning I wake up and its at 40%, I have sat here for hours today putting hot water through the vent holes on to the paper towel rolls, and the sponges, and I can't get it up past 48%. Either that stupid digital temp/humidity gauge thing is just totally wrong, or I'm just an idiot. I'm starting to get really sad if the 2 eggs don't hatch. My 5 year didn't even want to go to school today because she was afraid that they would hatch when she was at school, I promised her that I would come get her if they started to pip. I don't know what I'm going to tell her if they don't hatch. We candled them on day 18, and there was what looked like movement, they were so full except for the air sack, but it looked like movement in there, so at this point it will probably be my fault if they don't hatch.

I have no idea why I can't get it up there, I haven't opened up the lid since Monday, and its completely shut tight. I have both vents open like suggested on everything I read. I don't know. Stupid incubator!

Maybe you should plug one of the vents to raise humidity up a bit?

Also, remember it can take 24 hours from pip to hatch. If you see a tiny pip and immediately get your daughter home, she'll just miss school, and will wait endlessly for them to hatch. I wouldn't check her out until the hole is pretty significant.

Silly don't worry too much about the humidity I am sure it is fine. Try to remain calm, breath...haha :D I bet your humidity is just fine with all that stuff you have in there. I am so excited for you and I soooo hope they hatch just so we can see how excited you are!

My chickens seem to be on strike the last few days, they were doing great, and now egg laying has been about half what it was, quite suddenly, three days in a row. Wonder if the inversion is getting to them too! I need to go hang the picture of the roasted chicken in their house for incentive I guess....I wish the mice would stop having babies as well as the chickens have stopped laying :/ The mice seem to be an unstoppable force this year.

Lucky for me, mice haven't been an issue this winter. Mice and rats were simply awful last year though.

Sundancen sent me a couple of awesome pictures to post. I LOVE this cactus in the background.

Whoa! That is a big ole' cactus! I wish I was with her, it seemed really cold today. My poor girls have had frostbite issues too, I think because there are more this year than last, the humidity is harder to keep down in the coop. C'mon Spring, get here!
