Utah!

So Wendy, I decided this morning to see if I feel any movement, or hear any peeps. My poor 5 year old was just sitting there talking up a storm to them, almost willing them to make noise. Anyways I candled them, and they look different then at 18 days. I don't see any movement in the eggs like I was at 18 days, they were active on 18 days. We put them back in the incubator. But I think I screwed up somewhere. I feel awful about it too. Gary, I'm so so sorry!

I had my 5 year old take some photo's of the candling. They are bantam eggs so they are small. Any tips on the next hatch, we are going to try again. I almost don't want too, because I don't want to kill off more little chick. But my daughter really wants too, so we will try again.

Egg #!

Others will give you advice on the technical aspect, but my advice would be to put more eggs in! :) The more eggs you put in, the better chance you have of some hatching. Plus, if you figure half of the chicks will be roos... you need to put even more eggs in! (Isn't this what they call chicken math?

You have it exactly right. I kept 29 polka dots, everyone here thought I was nuts. I think I hatched 5 dozen eggs ----60 ish, got maybe 45 ish, gave some away, sold a few, kept 29 after rehoming a couple obvious boys, then some more boys popped up, now I am down to 12 total and there are 4 more boys. So 60 eggs, and keeping 29 birds to get 8 girls. LOL Good grief :lau

Speckled hills, thanks! She was a sweetie :idunno

Silly, those air cells look a little big, I am in shock because you had so much water going on, they should not have evaporated that fast, so I am stumped as to why, but that might have contributed?

There is more air sack in there now then there was on day 18, unless that stupid digital temp/humidity thing is way way off. I was freaking out because I couldn't get it to stay above 30% the entire 18 days, and then I couldn't get it up past 60% since lock down. So I actually just ordered a reptile one off Amazon and it will be here on Tuesday. It had tons of great reviews for hatching eggs with it.

And Ace, this next time I want to try get a bunch of eggs in there. So at least if only 2 or 3 hatch my 5 year old will be much happier. I already told her that we can't keep them all. I have to thin out what is outside already, we have 18 now. Way, way over my limit, but my neighbors haven't complained…yet…. I already know about which 4 I'm going to sell off in the spring. All of which haven't started laying yet, so I should be able to get them a good home in the spring. I just have multiples of those breeds, and I want to try to have one of each. Plus I want to try to maybe hatch some EEs if I can find some that will lay a nice Blue egg. If I can find one I will then re-home my EE that lays a nice light pink/tan egg. She will be 18 months in the fall, and I really need some color.

So I know for sure I'm going to sell a Brown NN (I have 3), Speckled Sussex, Light Brahma, and the CCM. I have 3 Marans outside, 2 from Wendy, and I'm not parting with those FBCM I just love the colors, so the CCM needs to go. Even thought I love her, I really need to thin out the larger hens. I really just need to move to a farm.

So right now I will hopefully have at least 8 Silkie eggs on Monday from my friends neighbor. I just need to find some more to add to them them. But he's pretty sure they will be good to go since his Broody hatched 3 out of 4 he let her sit on just a few weeks ago. But then again I really think its my fault on this hatch. So hopefully the next one will be much better. I just don't want to order eggs since I can't see to hatch any. lol

Silly, I have never seen anyone worry over a hatch like you have. I have no idea what could've gone wrong, but I am inclined to blame the incubator somehow. It's just very strange.

I have three pips now, and have turned on the webcam.

I just worried about it because of the 5 year old. But she's taking it pretty well. I know she was very sad about it, but at least she didn't freak out and all cry. She cries watching TV for anything that is sad, and a few weeks ago the neighbors dog died, and she still gets all teary eyed over that. So I was more worried about her being sad.

THANKS WENDY for making your webcam on. My 5 year old is so excited to watch them hatch. And of course she is now crying because hers didn't hatch, but she said its okay, she understands, I hope.
