Utah!

Cynthia today is day 19, so really not till Monday. And I've been good, I've only looked at them once today. Its so hard not going over to watch. And to rotate them. I hope they are okay in there, Temp this morning was at 98.7, and humidity on both gauges is at 59%, but I don't know what else to do to bring it up. Or my gauges are just off.

Sad note my NN/SG mix isn't doing too hot today, yesterday morning she did lay an egg to my surprise and was eating and drinking. This morning she was laying on her side with her head buried, and no food or water since yesterday. I took her out to see if I could perk her up and change out her paper towels, no bowl movement since last night, and today, she doesn't want to stand up at all. I just want to cry because I'm starting to think she's not going to make it.

My Beautiful Hokey Pokey has passed on, literally I never thought I would cry over a chicken, and I feel like the worse chicken mommy in the world. She was one of my favorites. I just loved her friendly personality, you could literally pick her up and pack her around, and she would sit on your lap if you sat outside with them, and she loved her head scratched. She was so beautiful, she was a dirty white, with the black spots all over. She had the black skin like a Silkie, and she had the craziest top head feathers, I just loved her crazy look, and I know I will never have another one like her.

Rest in Peace my little Miss Pokey.

Karen, the saddest post ever! I am so sorry you lost her. Sometimes it just happens, through no fault of your own at all, they just don't make it.

I am coming to SLC Monday, I would love to give you another one, I have three left, and they look just like yours. Is there anyway you would be free that afternoon? If you could meet us we are going to a hockey (Grizz) game at 1 or so, and would need to meet by then, because my dogs will be in the car and cannot be left with a chicken. I really want you to have another one! They all are dirty white with polka dots, black skin, and cute little bowties. Not as big as LF, but bigger than most bantams. They should all start laying anyday.

Thanks for the offer Lisa, I would totally take a few more of her in a heartbeat, but I really don't think its a good idea to add a new girl outside right now. I have no idea how she got sick, and I would hate for a new chicken to come in and contract whatever she had. I did Oxine out all the water and feeders yesterday, and then I did clean out all the straw and cleaned it all out of the coop. I wanted to spray out the whole coop with Oxine, and just drench it, but I don't dare too, I just don't want it damp in there at night, and I think it would take days to dry out, so that will just have to wait till warmer weather. I did rake up all the loose leaves in their side yard and sprayed the crap out of the ground, outside roosts, even the outside crate coop, because the all go in there all the time. I know whatever she got is probably going to be out there for months or years, but at least I tried to get most of it out. The coop really really needs to be sprayed but it will just have to wait. But all the other girls outside seem perfectly healthy, I was out there with them for hours yesterday. They are all active, chatty hens, still fighting over treats. None show signs of sneezing, or coughing. Nothing. And Pokey never sneezed or coughed either, no funky discharge either, other then her clear liquid poop, but that was after she drank almost a full gallon of water. She was drinking like crazy. I'm not thinking its Marek's so much anymore, because she was able to stand on her own, and she didn't have the wing spread like in Marek's, she did when I found her on the roost, but once I brought her in she didn't do that, plus she didn't feel like she had any sores or tumors, I checked her whole body, clean eyes bright eyes, clean vent and no discharge from her mouth or nose. She never was weezing or had a hard time breathing either. It was almost like she just hurt her self. She was eating and drinking a lot the first 2 days, but yesterday, she turned for the worse. So I have no idea what she could have contracted.

My husband almost wonders if she ate a piece of ceramic molds. Which is totally possible. We have like 6 pallets full of ceramic molds in the side drive way. This area is gravel, and I have always let the chickens down there, but all winter long I've had them just stay up in the back run because of the snow, but just last week I opened the gate and there are a few that has broke in pieces due to winter. It was 2 days after I opened the back gate to let them down she was sick, so its possible she ate some ceramic stuff. Which makes me ever sadder because I could have totally prevented that. So now everyone is locked back up in the back run, until we can get all of that cleaned up.

On the hatch note. I still have the 6-7 wigglers that if I'm patient will wiggle when I turn the light on in there, they are in total dark unless the light is on. No peeps yet, I was hoping with today being day 20 I would wake up to some peeps inside the eggs. Nope. Still worried about the humidity. Its at 58%, and both gauges are reading that. So I don't know if we are okay, or if I should quickly open it up and add another sponge. I'm so nervous to have them all hatch and somehow get sick from Pokey, they are going to be no where near where I had her, but still is freaking me out a little. And I'm tempted to find out how much it would cost to have them all vaccinated. LOL.

Yippee….

One of my Blue Green Eggs from Red Pipped, but its on the wrong side, I candled them all on lock down and I put all the air sacks facing the same way. But then again I was guessing on Reds eggs because I couldn't see in there. Now I'm a little worried because I really do think it on the wrong side, I don't hear any peeps from it either. But still I finally have a pip, hoping the other 16 follow behind it. I guess its time to go turn on the brooder light and get it all warm in there, I didn't want to get it all ready and jinx myself.
