Utah!

I just candled my silkie eggs. I have a lot that are doing well. This is how it usually is, then, lock down happens. Not quite sure yet, but I do believe it has something to do with the humidity. I am going to try to use less humidity this time, not the reg. 62..Going to try and keep it around the 57 to 60. I know that doesn't sound like a big difference, but from what I've been reading, it can be, especially on the smaller eggs. Crossing fingers. I have more of my friends eggs in there that has those fabulous full muff's and beards..like Dixie and Cotton, those came from her. The paints didn't fare well, only a couple are viable, but there are several BBS and one BLK, the only black she sent, doing well.
And Holy Moly. the other person that sent eggs, are really viable. Hope I get some nice silkies this time.
Remind me when they hatch? I would love a black one as beautiful as dixie! :)

Cynthia if you get a Paint, I totally want to buy one if you sell it. I wanted a Paint or a Splash so bad.

Anyways woke up at 5:45 to a screaming chirping baby, and that Leghorn hatched, but its BROWN! I looks like its going to look like a chipmunk, even has eyeliner. Going to go look up to see if that is what they should look like, I don't even think I've seen a brown Leghorn before. Maybe the other 2 will be white. Fingers crossed for you.

Good luck on the Easter Hatch, all! My hatch is over! (I put the eggs in half a day early... but mine always seem to hatch on day 20 anyways)... So, I started with 7 eggs, I pulled one at day 7, and left a questionable at day 14... in the end, all five of the viables hatched! :) yay!

I do have one question... one oft he chicks piped in the middle of the egg, and wasn't doing well. I waited 24 hours and no progress. I could ust see the beak breathing through the hole. So, I unzipped the shell and made a slight cut down the membrane. This morning, it had hatched... yay! Now here's my question: This little black chick has like, no fluff at all. its fluff is basically non-existent... almost like tiny little spikes... Has anyone had this before?

Silly, eeeeee! You got a brown Leghorn baby! <3 I love Leghorns. Such awesome personalities - Cynthia will probably agree with me.

Cynthia, I'm excited to see what you get out of your eggs!

Ace, I've had that. One of my last two Icelandics to hatch was super scruffy and looked half naked. Seriously. She's filled out more as she's grown. I have a BSL that was like that, too.

Thanks Lisa! I set 8 eggs. I had twice that many to start with, but half of them had been soaking in mud and I didn't trust all that water saturation, so they went in the fridge. And they are delicious.

Well I have a lonely brown Leghorn in there, at least the lady said they were either white or brown leghorns when my daughter picked those eggs, and they are white. So I'm pretty sure that is what it is. I don't have a Leghorn, I might have to keep one, I only have one white layer, and that is the stupid Houdan. Don't get me wrong, my daughter LOVES that chicken the most, but she is so stupid, and shes always running into me, and she waddles around like a penguin. Hahahhaah! But we only get maybe 3 eggs a week from her. Been saving for 2 weeks and barely have a dozen to color eggs, not sure how well dying brown eggs will be.

Hi! I am so glad that I found this thread! I am a total newbie so I hope that I'm posting this right :)!
A few days ago I picked up a few silkies from CAL-Ranch. The next day I was looking on ksl and saw Chase Hatchery's ad on ksl and decided that I needed 2 more. When I got there I was really surprised that it was just a tiny garage, but never having done this before I thought maybe that's normal? It also seemed like she had those babies packed in there really tight! I tend to go overboard in the opposite direction and spoil my critters so I was trying not to be too critical. When I told her that I wanted silkies she asked if I wanted boys or girls. I told her that I didn't think it was possible to sex silkies this young. She said that she was able to tell by their size. She had this little black one that she was sure was a pullet.. I took her/him and another little white one.

Iluvmysilkies- I think I'm the one that bought that little black baby! It has been a nightmare! Within a couple hours of getting home (it's a 20 minute drive to Bountiful) (s)he was dead. Then by the next morning the white one was dead. Then my other babies started acting sick. :( I've been panicked thinking it's me! But, my friend who has had chickens her whole life keeps promising me that my brooder is perfect and that I've done everything I should have and could have done. This morning I only have 1 baby left. Help! What should I do? I want to have silkies. I don't think I'll show, so pet quality is fine for now. Should I buy locally or online? Thank you!!!

I'm so sorry, it's hard to lose any - especially the innocent chicks. I'm not sure of your brooder setup but I would get the last chick out of there, get it on electrolytes/vitamins and then sanitize your brooder. With the chick loss I'm reading, I don't think this can be chalked up to diet. The loss ratio is higher than a 25 chick order a hatchery via postal. I've had 29 delivered b4, not one loss. I think there is a disease that she'll never get out of that garage now.

Normally I'd run to IFA or a breeder and pick up a buddy (or ten lol) ...but It think the little guy needs to be in QT. Be sure to wash your hands, bag the shavings, etc. I'd get him a bud in a couple days from anywhere but where they came from. Some of the chicken viruses can live in the dirt/coops for years... I'm sure chicken mites aren't far behind in the complaint department.

There are several good breeders on here that I would have no problems picking up a chick from. Good luck and healing thoughts to your Lone Ranger!

I am going to have hatching eggs available this week. I will have frizzled Americanas, frizzled turkins. Let me know if the list members want any They are $1.25 each. Also if anyone does any hatchery orders let me know I want to order a few chicks but not a full order.
