Utah!

hey everyone! thank you so much for the great advice and very kind thoughts! sadly, Lonely didn't make it through the day either. i'm trying to learn everything i can so that hopefully this doesn't happen again. do you think that it would be a good idea to add vitamins to chicks water from the very start? not just when they're sick? i've been adding acv, but maybe i need vitamins too. thanks! :)

I have never had a humidity pump. That sounds fancy.

And Silly, how DARE you go out to classic when you have pipper! Ha ha ha

I only use nice clean water for the new chicks. No electrolytes..or vitamins, unless they are in need of help.
Like I said on another thread..mama hen doesn't carry electrolytes under her skirt. If my chicks are running around nice and strong, I don't bother with anything extra in their water. Only give it to the ones that are weak, separately.

I certainly would. Its made a world of difference for my babies. It even says right on the package of some vitamins to give it to young chicks and to new arrivals the first week you get them but I dont think it hurts to continue giving it to them. Its just like a daily vitamin for us, wouldnt you think? I see my babies getting stronger since I have been adding vitamins to their water so thats enough to make me want to continue till they are at least a lil bit bigger :)

X2!
Haha that is funny "mama hen doesn't carry electrolytes under her skirt". It just struck my funny bone and I cannot quit snickering, that is a funny pic in my head!

So I came home to about 7 chicks in the incubator, and I have white/yellow Ameraucanas or the EEs, would those be Wheaten? They are from a Wheaten or Blue Ameraucana Roo with tons of different colored hens. I was surprised to come home and have white/yellow chicks.

Looks like maybe 2 OE in there if one could possibly be a blue looking in color. But I do see a Pip on an OE, and I have several other pips in the other eggs. I have 9 in the brooder now, and 5 in the incubator drying off. I will have to post some photos when my camera battery charges.

I can see why Cynthia doesn't, her chicks seriously live in a perfect world.

But if I get mine fm a feedstore or if I order, I always add electrolytes/vitamins for the first two weeks to help with the stress of shipping/handling. I did find a neat way of isolating a sick chick that I'd thought I'd share. Depends on the size of your brooder, mine are big. I take our aquarium that has a hamster lid and put it inside the brooder. Chick stays warm and feels like he's part of the flock. It's like he's got his own little clear bedroom plus I can give only him antibotics (which I do last resort).

I'm so sorry you lost the last one. IFA on 2100 So is getting chicks in 3x/wk. They are now ordering overnight to reduce chick stress. I have had very good luck with the chicks from there. They were (dunno about this yr) using the typical stacking brooders which I don't like, esp for banties, they get stuck if they get off the newspaper. I've picked up mine the morning they get the shipment.

I dunno about acv for a baby chick. I drink that stuff and it's strong, even way diluted (Braggs). It seems it shouldn't hurt them but it's pretty darn powerful. I have given it to them and my dogs when older. Right now I have garlic cloves in the girls' water.

I'm sure you get pick up some healthy chicks on here, just post and keep watching. Good luck, and again I'm really sorry about your chicks.

Hatch update. I have 24 chicks, 5 more pips, and I think 8 eggs in the bator that are quiters. I did a quick candle and I actually pulled 2 that looked way way funny, and wasn't moving. The others look like very developed chicks, but I couldn't tell movement, but they are all dark eggs, so I can't really 100% tell, so I left them. So right now it looks like 29 chicks if they all hatch out of their pips, and the question ones. Not bad out of 43 right?

But I have all yellow or yellow/blue Ameraucana's, even the EE's, I know that the guy who I got those from told me his Rooster was Heritage, but his hens were not so much. But most of them are all yellow little fluff balls, so are those Wheaten Blue? If they are, I'm so excited to keep 1 or 2 of them. I think I have 6 OE too Wendy, I need to go count them up. All are black/white except for one is like a grey/blue. They are so dang cute.

I also have 3 Brown Leghorns, and 2 Welsummers, but not I should have marked them because they are all brown chipmunks, but I think the 3 Leghorns are all smaller, they were in smaller eggs, and are a little different, so I think I know which ones those are. If anyone wants some, let me know. I will probably keep them through the weekend to make sure they are all doing good, About 6 are leaving today to my friend. Then the rest I'm selling off, except for maybe 6-7 of the ones I'm going to watch for a Pullet. I need me a good OE for sure. :D

I'll take photos when I get home, I have to leave again, I'm going to a Girl Scout Pinewood Derby.

Well, I wouldn't count them out yet, Silly. Remember they're not late until tomorrow. But yeah, sometimes stuff does happen. Sounds like you've had a great hatch. Can't wait to see pictures.
