What is going on with my ladies saddle feathers? Or maybe ladies don't have saddle feathers. Anyway, in that area. It's only my brown hens, 2 EEs and 1 Welsummer. Can you see them? You can see the down, but they don't have feathers covering the down back there. Mites? Feather picking? It's only affecting the brown ones so it's weird.

Well, I'm not much of an expert, but my girls looked like that because of feather picking. I didn't have a roo and their feathers went from that to bald. I had a friend worry that it was mites or lice so we tried all sorts of remedies. In the end we figured it was the hens picking on each other. I would spend some time watching them and see if the brown ones are getting picked on.

I have had my silkies outside in the nursery coop for a week and a half now. I put a 100 bulb in there for the night only. It's been warm enough, until today..to turn it off in the day. They are doing great. Not sure how big of a place yours will be in, so go by how they are acting about the heat source. Thinking yours may want heat for a while since they have been in, unless it gets back up to 80, then they don't need any heat in the day. I turn the lamp back on when it gets dark. I put a tarp down over the front too for now at night.

I just finished moving all the babies into the shed tonight and I am very nervous. I got one of those 85 watt red bulbs for the tiny babies (3-10day olds). I put them all in a small kiddie pool for now and put the lamp about 12 inches above the bedding so they could be as warm as they want, or get out from under it easily. Will that be hot enough for them you think? The shed is made of wood and is insulated. It has a small window that I can open or close for ventilation. The 8 week olds are in a large pen right next to them w/dixie and they do not have a lamp. Those babies should be old enough now to not need anything right? But.. I am not sure who to put (your babies) in with. I have recently been trying to add them to the older babies since they just make a huge mess when I leave them with the new babies. But I havent seen them huddling up with the older babies/and dixie yet & usually form there out sleep ball apart from them.. so I dont know if they will be warm enough if they are cuddling by themselves (theres three of them) without a lamp. Will they be ok with all that bedding inside an insulated shed without a lamp even if they are not sleeping with the older ones, or should I just put them in with the newborns with the lamp? I am very nervous about this first night, and tried to make everything as perfect out there as possible.

Awww! They are so beautiful. That first one reminds me alot of the light blue you gave me I would also love to take any of the vaulted babies you decide not to keep.. if there are no dibs on them. They'd fit right in with the babies I got from you the same age

I can put them in with the littler babies if you think they need the lamp, otherwise will they be fine without heat sleeping with the older babies/and dixie without lamp? Even if they arent all sleeping together? Yes the shed can be completely closed up so there's no breeze at all. It has a window I opened for ventilation because the shed is maybe 12x12 but I can close it if thats better. I literally screwed the heat lamp to some wood several inches above it so theres no way it can fall. So your thinking an 85watt down low for the babies will be plenty warm enough for them? Noone will be too cold? Which would you recommend for your babies? Stay with the older babies/and dixie without heat in the shed or just put them with the newer babies? They'd be fine with them, they are just super messy and step on the little ones, and some of the babies are really new so I moved them out so that the new ones could focus on eating and getting bigger and not being stepped on. Oh and yes they can all get away from the heat source. Im using a small kiddie pool with those ones and its big enough that it gives plenty of room to get away from it.

Sounds good too that you secured your heat lamp. It sounds like the 80 W should be great for them..you're doing good.

Ok great, thanks! Its been kinda nerve racking since its the first time putting them "out of the house" and I want to make sure im doing everything right. I noticed some of our nights can still get a little cold so I just wanted to make sure those babies I got from you will be ok without a lamp, or if you thought they should still have one.. I was mostly nervous about them because I noticed they are choosing to sleep together, just the three of them, instead of cuddling up with the older 8wk old babies yet, so I wanted to be sure they were warm enough out there without a lamp or not. And of course the new babies, because they are so young, i wanted to make sure the lamp was hot enough for them and that they'd be ok.

I checked my Icelandic eggs tonight. I think I have seven developing, possibly eight! Yahoo! I hope the incubator can hang in there for the next two weeks. And the weather. Oh, I'm going to be sweating bullets.

thanks a bunch again! Was just wondering if any of those eggs could have Icelandic mixed? I know you wrote the abbreviations on the eggs but still wasnt sure what they were hahaha
