Utah!

RJ, it sounds like you've got a great rooster! Yaaaay :)

It's sure blustery tonight. I was outside late with DH watering the garden. We've had a huge wave of squash bugs this year and they killed a bunch of our plants :( Boo. I keep catching them and feeding them to the chickens. Has anyone got any good control methods for squash bugs? I put down some sevin dust today, but they don't seem to mind it.

Have you tried really soapy water?

Lisa, I will try that, thanks.

Found out what happened to Flekka. She passed away from the heat yesterday ad DH removed her body so I wouldn't be upset. Everyone, please make sure you do everything you can for your birds in this heat. I thought mine had enough water and shade, but it was still too hot.

In the continuing sage of Rooster Cogburn, I've a few new photos for pfrosty and family. And an interesting event which transpired this evening. We were giving some fresh uncooked corn to the birds this evening. RC presided over the event in his usual majestic style. When all of a sudden, a stupid dog came through the yard, we are just sitting out there on the lawn, enjoying watching the birds, and before we could even say a word… RC went over and stood that mutt down. Amazing, He is doing his job, in first class style. We just love him. I am a very proud keeper of what has turned out to be a wonderful adoption into our flock of a first class Barred Rock roo.

These photos were taken just moments before we had an uproar with the dog.

My chest won't puff out quite like RC's but my pride in him makes me try anyway,

RJ

Really nice photo RJ! Our neighbor's dog would always look into our run through a chainlink fence. I'm not sure if RC became somewhat accustomed to him or not. Glad to hear he stood up to your intruder. I do miss his crowing. I'm glad he has worked out well for you. He looks awesome!

PICTURE OVERLOAD. IT WAS SO NICE OUT THIS MORNING, I GOT THE CAMERA OUT AS I GAVE THEM THEIR MORNING WHEAT BREAD. WILL JUST PUT THEM SMALLER, CAN CLICK IF YOU WANT. SUNDANCE, WONDERING ABOUT THE BLUE GIRL I GOT FROM YOU AT THE VET'S OFFICE, SHE HAS SHORT LEGS. WHAT IS SHE A MIX OF? SUCH A MOVER! IT'S A MIRACLE I CAUGHT HER STANDING STILL FOR A MIN. SHE'S PRETTY!

The first are of a bantam cochin, that I was told would be LF. Ha..I had thought I was ordering bantam cochin eggs a while back..the lady could tell by how I was talking about them, she then writes back, these eggs are LF .. did you know that? I said no, but that I would take them anyway. Well, the one, I decided to keep..is a bantam. What? lol She's sooo sweet. Not sure what to call this color.

Cute fluffy butt. She surprised me and squat right in front of
me, I almost stepped on her..silly girl. Squats when ever I am
right over her. I have to be careful.

My Heritage Barred Rock Pullet. I think she will be laying by
next month.

There's one of my EE's by her.

Here's Gladys. lol..my buff NN. I keep telling her to go lay an
egg. She refuses. I think she's close though.

She's big!

Diane, here is the little blue..short legs.

My Rhodebar..does so well in the heat!

Lisa, here is Molly. She's a pretty little girl.

The wind was blowing Molly's tail feathers. There is a splash EE
in front of the Rhodebar, and another EE that I am crossing fingers
is a girl..the black and white little one. A RIR pullet up front.

Molly again, the blue that I don't have a name for yet from Diane,
the Splash EE, she has puffy cheeks!

Molly and the two EE's, and looks like my RIR peeking in.

So, who is Ernie? Diane said that one of the babies that hatched here a couple of weeks ago could be from Ernie..and now Lisa mentions an Ernie. :D Photos Diane?

Your flock, is the most amazing flock, beautiful mix of colors!

And… while we were out this evening watching the birds and the pond, Gilbert, our frog made an appearance. Of course we snapped a picture of that! We have a 500 gallon pond near the back door and it is here we often sit to view the fish, birds, chickens and what ever else shows up in the yard that evening. We have had Koi, but where we freeze so hard, we just get big goldfish now and go with what works. Grandkids love the fish, chickens and Gilbert when he shows himself. Anyway just thought I would share some of our 'viewing' space and where we hang out when we have a moment or two.

My thanks to all,

RJ
what a beautiful pond! I LOVE that you have a frog in it! did you add it to your pond? or did it find it naturally? I'd love to get a pond setup again, and be able to watch the goldfish/koi swimming in it :D however.... I imagine that I would have a big problem with the water snakes eating them.... they live nearby (literally behind my property, because there is a stream back there) Last time I had a pond, I would always find the snakes in there, eating my fish :(

What are the blue babies you are hatching right now? Are they smooth, or frizzle? LF or bantam?

my back pond has somebeautiful big koi and of course mosquito fish, We also have about 15 frogs this year. Ponds are so much fun and the chickens love to sit in the shade and watch the fish. A few of them have had a dunk and have swum to the side and crawled out

They are all from the Blue Copper Marans rooster---as far as the mommies.... there is my black frizzle EE to make frizzled Olive Eggers........ SBEL's, Wheaten Ameraucanas and EE's to make regular Olive Eggers.... FBCM, both Black and Blue........ and there are some from My Golden Cuckoo Marans hen to make sex linked babies. I wish I would have stopped turning them sooner. I have the SBEL blue baby out, they seem to be doing the best, there are several pipping....and another blue baby from the frizzled black EE mom. All are LF

I usually get them on my zucchini so I always plant marigolds or zinnias next to them. I did notice that there was a squash bug on my plant earlier this month even with the flowers next to them. It must be a bad year for them. I pulled out my DE and sprinkled it right on the bug and plant. Haven't seen one since. Maybe try some DE on them and see if that clears them up.
