Utah!

Hi Karen! I'm not going to be around on Saturday so don't worry about stopping for Briana's chick. Thank you for offering! Good luck at your dog class!

I will be up there till 1pm on Sunday too.

Iluv! I really like that in fact, I think I might make one connected to my coop!
It's so neat! I am really loving this idea. Lastnight I spent some time showing the chickens how to use it and all my older ones figured it out pretty quick, woo hoo! But the littler babies were still avoiding it. This morning I went out earlier and sat and watched them to make sure the babies were getting it before the heat of the day set in, and I watched as the remaining babies that didnt try it lastnight, just went right up to it and seemed to have gotten it right away to now! So they must have been playing around with it earlier before I got out there. :) I feel very relieved to see them already using it, and soo fast! I just got it lastnight. Such a neat idea for a waterer. Its also the largest bucket he could find so it holds about 7gal. I love how it adjusts to different heights and is made so that I could just place the hanger into the corner of the coop so its not taking up space. :)

@Iluvmysilkies

That is an very interesting concept for placing a waterer. How many nipples did you use on it, and am I correct in thinking that there are not any on the 'back side?'

On the Cache Valley coop tour, I suppose that might be fun, but it would seem that I am always under construction of some kind. So always in a mess…

Hope everyone had a nice 24th of July,

RJ
I have 4 nipples on just the front side, none on back. I wanted it to be able to be placed in the corner, so its not taking up space. I have 8 birds and the 4 nipples seem to accommodate them well. I chose the horizonal nipples so that the silkies could see them much easier and they are suppose to be the best, and make the least mess compared to the vertical gravity ones. They also have a tini tiny cup on them that collects tiny drops and draws the attention of the birds, and again causes less to fall to the ground. So far, i am pleased with this idea :)

Yeah. I like the idea. The only thing I would worry about are the chickens roosting on on the frame and leaving messes all over the bucket/frame. I might try attaching a simple support about 6 ft high, and then just hang the bucket with a chain...

Thats a great idea! I worried about that to but I wasent too concerned since ive never seen a silkie jump higher then a foot in my life haha. All of mine stay on the ground, and only use very low ground perches so I thought this design would work out just fine :)

Got my chickens new waterer tonight! I have been wanting to try one of these for a while. I think the guy did a great job making it for me. What do you think? I had him make it so that I could put it into the corner of the run. I showed the girls how to use it and so far the older ones seem to have caught right on! Woo hoo! But the littler ones, are still avoiding it. I hope that the older ones will help them learn, and explore it more tomorrow. Im only a little nervous because it get soo super hot very quick so I want to be sure the little ones will pick it up right away. Cause I read that you should take away any other water buckets so that they learn to use it faster, and im afraid if I put a bowl back in there it'll set them all back. One of the little ones was trying a little bit so its really only the 3 youngest that I havent seen go to it yet. I have shown all of them individually, but so far only the older ones are interested in it on their own. They seem to have figured it out quick. It was fun sitting there watching them figure it out and get eachother interested, its soo cute lol. I have it right where the bowl used to be and once they get the hang of it, ill set it into the corner. Have any of you tried one of these yet?

I have several of these, The one in the coop I hang from the rafters. I also have the smaller ones in all my cages. I had one in my grow out coop but it leaked really badly, I took it back to IFA and they exchanged it,

True. I have all LF (mostly crosses) and they love to jump, climb, and explore! I've never had silkies though... they probably don't jump cause they can't see that high through their head feathers!

I am sure thats exactely it lol, they arent very confident when they cant see very well lol. I have to trim the fluff around their eyes every month so they can see better and not startle so easily lol.
