Utah!

Well, I booted my broodies off their nest today. I can't find any baby turkeys and it's too late in the season to gets eggs going. Plus, my turkey hen is horribly skinny from setting for so long, and I don't want to lose her to attrition or something. Time to fatten her up so she can live ok through winter. I'd be lying if I said I'm not at least a little disappointed.

yeah i actually have seen them fight over a mouse. also the neighbors as well as i have seen a large drop in the amount of mice as well as other pests since i got my chickens a few years ago. my girls are great little hunters, especially my bsl's

Hello all! Perhaps some of you CCL owners can help me figure this out. I hatched out two eggs. One of the chicks had a white spot on it's head and the other chipmunk stripes. Boy and girl, right? Well the white spot died a few days later and the chipmunk one lived. So all along I have refused to believe it was a boy despite it's crowing, pointed feathers and large comb. Today took the cake though. It started to mount one of my hens and ripped several feathers out. I have researched on the internet several times to make sure I didn't mess up on the gender but how can this be? Either way he/she has got to go.

Anyone interested in a CCL roo for free? If not he's headed for the stew pot and it will be the most expensive bird I have ever eaten ;). Amanda, does your friend that breeds them have any interest?

Sundance: You wouldn't BELIEVE how huge the white chick you gave me is! He towers over the two maran pullets, much less his blind friend!! He looks almost odd he's so big but has actually been nice with a little chasing of the girls but I think he still protects Mr. Fluffy (who crows also btw!).

I've watched and helped this little blind guy figure out how to get around in his dark world. It went from helping get in and out of a tire nest every night, then a cuddle puddle of 4 on the ground, then just him and white roo sleeping on the ground when the hens started roosting.

Anyhows, everyone roosts high now but Mr Fluff. He started "roosting" on a branch...that's on the ground LOL! I so wish I had taken a pic, you'd think it was a chicken afraid of heights. So I took the branch and braced it about 2" off the ground and he used it last night. Hopefully that'll work until I can get my husband to build a sight-challenged ladder to the inside coop.
