Utah!

Greetings mason810 and welcome to both BYC and the Utah thread. It is sixes on IFA vs. Cal Ranch, I like the bigger variety at my local IFA, when I don't pre order my birds. You might want to consider placing an order, to get the birds you wish. Also, there are quite a few in this thread that have young chicks for sale as well. If you know the breed(s) you wish, just ask here and perhaps you can looking into getting them that way. Lots of fun to choose and pick the traits you value most, an exciting time in your time as a chicken keeper.

Best to you and your new birds,

RJ

Welcome, mason810! What kind(s) of breed(s) are you looking at getting? I have found that the quality of care for chicks varies based on location. The store chain doesn't seem to be as big a factor. The Cal Ranch in Tooele is the best I've seen, though they have a more limited selection.

Cfack, I would take precautions against them, even if you don't see them around. They're everywhere. I used to live in West Valley and we had them living in our chimney one year. They're brazen things.

RJ, love the egg picture! Who are those from? The one on the right looks like a BR, maybe? They are beautiful :)

Speaking of chicks and feed stores, I haven't dared set foot in our Cal Ranch lately. I don't want to get attached to the fuzzbutts that may be there. And, my Icee eggs are on day 8.

Small Medium and HUGE! Love that big ole egg~!

My needs are pretty simple...two barred Plymouth rocks and two buff orpingtons. I called the Cal Ranch in West Jordan today, and whoever answered the phone told me she didn't know what hatchery their chicks come from. When I called The IFA in Riverton, she said half of theirs come from privett in New Mexico, and the other half comes from Dunlap in Caldwell Idaho. I think I would prefer the Idaho hatchery, but there isn't really any way to guarantee that I could get a chicken from Idaho, unless I was there when they opened the box.

Have you ever thought about ordering them online? I super love Cackle myself. You have to order a minimum of so many chicks but they sell easy enough on KSL, then you get to pick out your favorites. Also there is McMurray, Meyer and Ideal. Others on here all have theirs that they prefer, it is kind of fun to open the box of peeping fluff when it comes! Just an idea!

The manager at CAL here in Logan said theirs came from Privett last year. Not sure if that is every store or just this one.

Hello! We are new to Utah, moved to Logan last August and are brand new to chickens. We brought 8 little fluff balls home from the IFA in North Ogden a couple days ago - 2 Ameraucanas, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Gold Laced Wyandotte, 1 Cuckoo Marans, and 1 Welsummer. All are doing awesome and we're so excited to be a crazy chicken family. :) We are currently on the hunt for a coop to accommodate our lil ladies. We've checked IFA and CAL Ranch but don't want to pay that much for a coop that probably won't last that long. Also found a beautiful coop at Down Home but it was $700 or $800 and we don't have that much to spend. Any other suggestions besides the classifieds which I've also been trying to keep an eye on? Any great DIY coop plans that won't break the bank to build? And what predators will we be dealing with? We live on the east side of Logan between USU and the mountains. Thanks! :)

Sneaking these babies in the incubator so they can hatch before I set the easter hatchalong eggs lol So it will be interesting I have two bators full of eggs hatching on four different dates....I hope I get it right
