just read that raw apple cider vinegar can make a hen have more girls than boy chicks. i have no idea if its true or not but might make a good science project for a kid for school and it also could not hurt anyway. also unrelated to this i read about slash eggs, yeah not something to do when you are eating lol

Hmmm I dunno about this, my girls get ACV in their water and I seem to have a ridiculous rooster count in most of my hatches LOL! Never heard of slash eggs..so I googled....are you talking about the unboiling of the boiled egg thing? That looked pretty bizarre.

That's... yummy. Ha ha Really, though, I do appreciate reading all I can about various oddities, and illnesses. It's good to be armed with information. So thanks!

Gus, that is cute about your surrogate mommy hen. If my girls aren't broody, they just get the deer in the headlights look around chicks.

She really worked hard for them, but she hopped out of the brooder and.went back to the coop. She clucked the whole way there, trying to get the babies to follow her. They totally didn't pay attention to her. Ha ha ha She promptly planted herself in a nest box, and hasn't moved since. She is determined to get some baby love! I guess the way to get a broody when I want one is by letting her hear babies... Chickens are *so* strange/numerous/heartbreakingly cute sometimes. What a weirdo.

Just wanted to check and see how your Houdans are doing--I just had one out of the blue get cross beak and it was nasty! Just like that gal on here a few weeks ago--Ipickupick (not sure the spelling)...it was so weird they were all fine then one morning, a little crooked and by the next morning it was GROSS! We had to cull it yesterday, so sad. Hope nobody else gets that. I sooo wish we could find more bloodlines for these poor Houdans. I am working on that. They are such pretty birds.

Mine is doing so well so far! It loves hanging out with all my other little breeds!!! Mine had a small little cap, but it is starting to come in a little bigger now, which I'm happy about. But yeah! So far it's healthy and growing!

yeah most stuff i am ok with but those pictures were a bit much for me.

in other news i lost my last leghorn. she was another sweet girl. she was also hatched in fall of 2010 so she lived a long life. its sad but at the same time i am proud they have lived so long and its part of life so i am ok with it. she died right in front of me, went out to the coop and she jumped down looked at me, bawked and died. she was healthy as can be so i am chalking it up to old age.

by the way if any of you want some good info on avian diseases i recommend "strouds digest on the diseases of birds" by robert stroud. its a good book with a lot of info but may be more technical than a lot of people need. its a older book but has solid info.
