Utah!

Wow, our family is having the worst luck with chickens. One of our baby chicks isn't acting right. It is our welsummer. She hasn't been eating, and has been very lethargic. For a while she started getting better, standing up chirping, eating when we put her beak in water. We condemned her to be well enough to be put back with the other chicks. We came back later, and she was back to the way she was before. I am really just about ready to give up on chickens now after this weekend. We really hope she will make it, but it isn't looking very positive.

I am so sorry. Have you given her any medicated feed? I totally understand how you feel. I have lost so many birds since I have started keeping poultry, some due to bad predator attacks and some to freak accidents. Don't give up yet, though. They are worth it. Hugs to you.

Had to share because I think this picture is hilarious. :)
My littlest chicken whisperer... Errr... screamer? Lol. She always wants the most rambunctious chicks but they sit with her nicely while they tend to run away from the rest of us. All the chicks flock to her when she goes in the run.

Cute photo! Chicken screamer seems to be the perfect caption :)

I have someone coming from Vernon, that works here in Spanish Fork to bring me some more Marans eggs, and a few OE's.  Where's Vernon?  lol...It's great that he will bring them by....at 6 in the morning!   That's ok..not shipped.  :)

It's a little ways south of us, perhaps a half an hour or so. It's by Rush Valley.

We had no idea how much we'd enjoy having chickens. After being in Germany for a decade, American grocery store eggs gross me out and I thought I was just getting into it to have decent eggs again. I did not know we'd fall in love with them, that they'd have so much personality and become pets. Our BR is like a therapy animal for my husband with his transition from the military to civilian life. He comes home from school every day, talks to it, let's it ride around on his shoulder. He loves that bird!

I can no longer do store bought eggs. They make me sad because I think of all those poor little hens in cages, plus they taste awful.

I got my rooster collars in the mail yesterday and just put it on my Salmon Faverolle so I will know in a few short hours how well it works:)

Let us know!

RJ, those dyed brown eggs are absolutely gorgeous! I know that Sphinx has gotten some excellent colors out of hers in years past.

I made an exciting discovery this morning. I found a soft shell turkey egg in the run. My new girls are finally laying! I also found a turkey nest in the neighbor's yard. It looks like my senior girl has been busy, too. I have yet to crack them open to see if they're fertile.

And, we officially got and address for our property in Delta yesterday :) We are working on getting a power line installed so that we can take the trailer down and use the AC while we are working on the land. Woohoo!

Hey my Utah people!!! Does anyone here happen to have any FEMALE ducks of any breed they are looking to sell???? It seems I can find them in about every other state...lol

I am scheduled to hatch ducklings in about 2 weeks but other than that I don't know of many people down here who have ducks.

The guy came this morning, bright and early. He says it takes an hr. to get here. He only works 15 days a month at this job out here.

Nice enough eggs, not as pretty as the ones I got in the mail from my winning, but at least I will have a chance at getting a girl. Love the colors of the blues. I showed him my two, and says yes, I got a blue and a splash.

Does anyone know how to cure a hen of being an egg eater? I am not quite sure who it is but I am almost positve that it is my one and only olive egger. I don't want to get rid of her but I can't have her eating eggs. Sigh. But on a plus side I bred my blue orpington rooster to my golden cuccko marans hen and the chick is blue with with barring. So super cute. I also experimented with a sicillian buttercup hen as well. I think the chick will look like a dirty blue.

I would like to introduce 'Moe' of Larry, Moe & Curly fame, one of my three French hens. These birds with 'top knots' are a deviation in my stalwart course… but the DW loves them, so that has to count for something. They are in the four to five weeks of age at the present time. Starting to look something like chickens, well with a top knot. The way things are going, it will not be long until I have birds with feathers on their feet!

On the egg eater above, other than putting her in the stew pot or freezer camp, you might try to give her a time out in a cage. One, you will see if you have the right bird, and two, a few days to a week of cage life may reset her thinking. Perhaps in the same vein as of breaking a broody hen, placing them in an empty cage off of the floor, if you are perhaps familiar with that.

Anyway have a nice day folks,

RJ

Hey, not sure if anyone saw my original post, but does anyone know how to get tube feeding supplies around here without a prescription? I just need some
syringes and catheters, but whenever I try to buy them I have to cancel my order only to be told I need a prescription for a piece of tubing.

My hen is rather sick, so if anyone could help out I would appreciate it! Please? Anyone?
