Harriman area. Hi folks!

Oh hi! I live in Herriman as well.

Today we let our mama hen take her chicks out of the coop. The first thing she did in the run area after making sure all her chicks was safe, was start digging a hole to take a dust bath in. All her chicks were watching her in interest. Then these little 10 day old chicks (rough guess on age) all got right next to momma and decided to give it a try. It was an entire family of chickens taking a dust bath snuggled up. It was really cute. Wish I got a picture or a video.

I know they're only 6 weeks old, but my americauna's tail feathers look different than my BR and my 2 BO's tails. Anyone think that "she" might be a "he"?

I would go by comb and waddle color. Light pink at that age is usually hen, and a darker color is usually boy By my experience. I don't think I would judge just by tail feathers on an EE.

Speaking of 6 week old EEs, I have two I got together. One has a grey head and the other is white and blonde. I read somewhere that some EEs combs can mature faster than others but do you think the grey headed one is a cockerel? I got them at the same time/place.

My guess would be yes, because of the reddening. I love getting multiples at the same age that you can use as a comparison. Identifying roosters is much easier that way.

Question for you guys that use broodies....If you use a broody to hatch chicks in the coop, and can put food and water in the coop.....what about the ladder...do the chicks try to go out the door and fall out or go down the ladder and can't get back in the coop? Or does mom keep them in the coop ok? Mine is about a two foot drop from the doorway to the ground. Wondering if you have to move the mom to ground level or if it can be done in the coop.

Lisa, I always make sure my broody mama is on the ground. I use a dog kennel. They love it! All snuggled back inside of it. I put water and food just outside of the kennel for her to come out when she wants. This kennel is kept in a separate run..it has a wall to separate a part off for getting in and out of the wind or wet..so kind of like a little coop at the end..that's where the kennel is. Works great. I was always afraid of having mom and her babies up off of the ground.

my coop that I have my broodys in has a ledge that is almost a foot off the ground. I've noticed that when the chicks are hatched they don't go back to the nest box until they areally about 2ish weeks old. My broodys will try and make a nest on the ground but I use a plastic kitty litter bucket and put it on the ground and put nesting material in there and they use that until they can jump to the nest box. That is my experiences with them :)
