Utah!

so i know for sure which hen of mine is trying to crow now. i had a idea before but its hard because i could not see who was actually doing it since they see me as a rooster and dont dare doing it in front of me. but the girl tried right in front of my mother today. the great news is she is my least liked hen. she seriously runs if i look in her direction, is mean and we just have never liked each other. not sure if i will get rid of her or not because she does lay good and the crow attempt is not bad. but it does make me think. she is one of my ee :) she will be replaced sooner or later tho and she is fairly old. but yeah i am very happy she is the one doing it

Isn't today beautiful Utah!?! I decided to recreate one of my favorite duck picture today :)

We have a 7 month old little BO. I don't think she has started to lay yet. But that is not the question as of now. I am concerned because her beak is staying to split in half. I can't really describe it, and BYC doesn't like me posting pictures. whenever I try to post a picture, it just closes it and says it crashes. Anyway. Can anyone give me help? She is eating and drinking water just fine, but it has been slowly getting more and more cracked. She is a beloved pet, and our family would be devastated to have to put her down if it gets to it. Any help is welcome. Thank you in advance!

can she eat and drink ok? does the split go all the way through? dont give up hope yet. i have seen some horrible beak issues in birds and its not always the end of the world or life threatening

For what little it is worth, when my barred rock cracked her beak last year, I took her to creekside animal hospital in Draper (near Ikea) to get it fixed. (the accident was our fault so felt honor bound to correct it.) Cost about $70. Had to drop her off and pick her up a few hours later.

Now my husband jokes she's worth about $10 a pound. She's layed a lot of nice eggs since then.

I've taken my duck there, and they are really nice. My last vet bill was $180, but he was worth it! It was out fault too, one of my sons friends was chasing him (

) and stepped on him and broke his leg. Let's just say he hasn't come back over to play.

I always worry about that with kids.

Thanks for the heads up on the vet. I was calling all over yesterday trying to find a vet that would see a duck and be able to treat her. It did not occur to me to ask in here. DUH. Wasatch Exotics said they could treat ducks, $65.00 for initial visit. I will check with Creekside too. Im sure that one is closer. I have not taken her in yet. Still having a hard time coming to terms with taking a duck to the vet when I wont even spend the money on going to the Dr. I have started her on a wide-spectrum antibiotic I got from IFA called Oxytetracycline HCI. Wish us luck. Im a bit of a granola cruncher so this was a big step for me.

On a brighter note I got an egg yesterday that was 4.2 oz! It was huge! I blew it out into scrambled eggs today and saved the shell.

What is the biggest egg you have gotten?

If you go to Creekside, it is a $45 office visit. Make sure you ask for Dr. Orr, he seems to know a lot more about ducks, I saw a different Dr. last time I went in, and he ordered a bunch of tests I don't think Dr. Orr would have run. He has been in this field a long time, I have been bringing birds to his office (back when they were on Ft. Union) for almost 20 years. No joke. That's why it was the first place I checked when my duckling got a broken leg.
