On getting back to my earlier post... I haven't had the time to q-tip/dye to figure out if I hv a RIR laying two browns or if it's an Americana, but judging by responses on this board and the fact I'm not getting the Americana eggs that I should, I'm guessing my 2nd brown egg is from an EE. bummer! I so wanted a blue egg. I hv 4 EEs and am getting 3 greens and the brown.

And... a question for all. We built a new, smaller coop this year and it is not insulated. The girls are fairly crowded in there but they seem to really enjoy it. Does anyone heat an un-insulated coop? I'm going to cover up the one small window with plexiglass and the entrance is small (and has a drop down door if we need to shut them in for a storm).

We were going to put in a large window for light but based on input here and how my girls choose the nest box farthest fm the window, it's been pretty obvious they hv preferred the "darker privacy". I used to hv a large insulated coop and kept a light in there (winter 24/7) that kept the water fm freezing, but I swear these girls are happier chickens.

I don't know how to post a pic of the coop or I would. Oh, -- we live in Summit County so it gets pretty dang cold in the winters. We will be putting up boards on the run that gets the winter wind to prevent snow blowing in. Their yard is covered.

Thanks for any advice.

I had seven hens in my little tractor last year although only two were standard size birds. I had a forty watt bulb in the coop on when it was really cold and a forty watt bulb in a can under the water bucket and they seemed fine all winter. There is a picture of my coop on my page but I don't have a shot of the light or the water heater.

Our 17 month old SLW just died today. Found her under the feeder. She was dustbathing and normal this morning. She loved food and had a tendency inhale it and make all these weird choking/honking noises.

Looks like it finally caught up with her.

Q: How do I post pictures on the forum?

...and
don't forget ventilation!

Thank you for info! Hope this works.... We still need to add a vent. I hv been using the little window and door for venting but I think one close to the ceiling under the covered yard part might work better for winter weather.

There is a door at the top of the ladder, just can't see it. The window you see is the only window. We were going to put a larger one with shutters on the backside so it isn't bright & sunny inside like our last one. But I do think the girls prefer its "cozy-ness". Also isn't as dark inside as one would think (except at night).

Wow Elkmtn that is a great looking coop! Your proposed site for a vent was my first thought before you mentioned it. Very Nice

ECONOMICAL, HIGH-QUALITY CHICKEN FEED:
yippiechickie.gif

I'm sorry I got delayed getting everything together. But it's coming soon! I will post a link here to the Order Form by the end of this week.

I will be selling a 17% Layer Feed in the form of Small Pellets. There is less waste and contamination with Pellets and the special small size is easier for small chickens to eat than standard-size pellets.

Thanks for the kind words everyone... and yes, it's always hard to lose one.

On a lighter note...

(And I really need to get you some pictures. Sorry I'm slackin'. I just realized we did another bumble foot two nights ago and I didn't get pictures of that either.)
