Any takers?

There is a girl in St George I think that is taking chickens and roosters, she advertises on KSL poultry page....I think her name is Whitney

I was thinking that, myself. We're busy getting our garden in - some stuff should have gone in the ground weeks ago, but I'm planting it anyway. I'm alternating rows of peas (that I planated in March and it's been so cold they're only 2 inches tall) with new rows of pole beans, so if/when the peas die out from the heat, the beans will grow up the teepee over them. I just bought two more rhubarb starts. Our previous plant was getting weird - the stalks were super thick and bitter, and was already bolting to seed this week. So I ripped it out. I got a lot of peppers and tomatoes in the ground, including some varieties I haven't tried before - anyone grown Black Prince, or Cherokee Purple? I've got to get some netting up around the currant bushes. When I went out to pick them last year, the ladies had entirely stripped both bushes that very morning - I guess they were finally ripe enough, because they hadn't touched the bushes until that day. I may just have to move the bushes into the fenced garden area to keep them safe.

Our hens are happy with the warmer weather! And laying like crazy. We've got several neighbors buying eggs now, I'm considering getting a few more pullets soon to make sure we have enough laying through the winter. A few of our older hens will be three this fall, so I'm thinking about rotating them out with younger stock... I just need to find them a home where they won't be butchered.

DH has been remodeling our deck. Whoever built it really didn't know what they were doing, so he's been making it stronger, etc. The space underneath is the chickens' favorite hangout during the day, so they're currently mad at him - he re-graded and put lots of rock under there to move water away from the house, so they can't scratch and dust bathe like they used to.

It's going to be a gorgeous weekend!

same here. i got tomatoes in so far but that is still about 17 of them oh and i do have some greens in too. i have tons black oil sunflowers popping up

its cool you have currants, not too many people have them. our rhubarb looks like it is bolting too, i wounder if i should cut that part off? i got a horseradish plant today, never grew one but there is a first time for everything. a old man next door and i had a little argument a few days ago, he called my yard a monstrosity and told me i needed to hire someone or move to a condo... my yard looks great so i think he just wanted to complain. to be honest i think his mind may be going downhill. he likes control and will often come cut our bushes when we do not want them cut and is mad because we plant tulips. my brothers wedding is next week so we have been busy with that oh and with the rain we have been getting our roof picked a nice time to leak

if you have a swamp cooler and get rid of it make sure they do not leave the stump and make sure they patch the hole good. we now will be resealing it up like crazy and the insurance is nice enough to pay for our bathroom ceiling to be replaced

its a good thing too because i have enough to do in the next few weeks. my girls are good. i walked in to tuck them in and my one leghorn who is in love with me woke up and jumped to my shoulder and wanted to sleep on me

she did not get her way though but i did think about it for a second

Seriously - he got mad because you planted tulips? Tulips? The friendliest flowers after daisies? Clearly, that man has issues. And if he cut MY bushes without permission, he'd be in serious trouble.

I love our currant bushes, and want to put in a couple more, but am running out of room in the backyard. We are lucky to have a really big back yard, but we also have a big garden, raspberry hedge, chicken coop & run, fruit trees, etc., plus four kids and a standard poodle. And I'm putting up a clothes line this weekend (it kind of looks like the ribs of an umbrella, but it doesn't fold down). Maybe I'll put them in the front yard - I'm thinking of putting a couple rhubarb there, too.

I planted kohl rabi, spinach, kale, swiss chard, and a couple kinds of lettuce, too. My fruit trees are finally blossoming, I'm hoping we'll get some pears and plums this year - didn't get a single pear last year because they bloomed too early and it was too cold.

yeah he did. we like our tulips and some were passed down through the years from my great grandma who came here from holland. my parents say we need to be nice to him but when he said what he said we are no longer speaking to each other. you should plant currants around your fruit trees because i guess they help each other. we have 5 currant bushes (red, black and pink) then we have raspberry's, blackberry's, blueberry's, gooseberry's, and tons of strawberry's. we like out berry's lol

Well I was wondering the same... and jealous over hearing about all the gardening going on. I hv to remember to bring the one hanging flower pot I hv in every night or it could freeze and die. And a garden's out of the question with all the critters. Tried container gardening but I spend all day chasing sun and the chipmunks dine b4 we get them. Lettuce did ok for the chickens tho. I've resorted that I'll be hitting the farmers market and begging for seconds.

Now OT:
Speaking of cranky old men... I work PT (supposed to be anyway) for one, and he had a deadline (in his mind) and kept saying another 15 minutes....from 4:00pm (when I was supposed to leave) to 7:30pm. I was SO torked when I got home.

Two nights ago it started all over again but this time I started feeling "funny". Told him "My frustration level is VERY high right now", when I had to put my head down he hurried me up. I kept telling him to slow down as I was having a hard time seeing and comprehending what he was asking me to type (I was taking a 15-pg dictation). Long story short..had to call husband and he took me straight to ER. Hv a "Nuclear Medicine Myocardial Perfusion Scan" whatever the h that is on Monday. The boss feels bad now...maybe I'll get a raise.

On the chicken front -- the coop is built!! Girls move in today. I'll try to get a pic. They will be so happy. He didn't hv time for roosts or nesting boxes yet but put in a huge pipe corral panel on a slant (secured) that'll do until he can get a chance to build the wood ones.

Betsy insists on sleeping on the big dog bed EVERY night now. Try putting in her pen, even with a blanket hiding the rest of us, but she jail breaks. And she won't share with the dogs, pretty funny.

Did anyone see the KSL ad for wanting 5 fresh or frozen chicks?

I know big snakes (looked at his other ads) gotta ea, but why not mice (and this coming fm someone who's also had pet mice). My daughter's worried that's where Marty's Deleware babies went and wishes we'd bought them now.

Someone is feeding chicks to a snake?! That makes me sick to my stomach. I'm hoping hoping hoping that Marty's babies didn't go to that guy! I would have taken them if I'd have thought someone would be that cruel.

I hope your tests come out ok! I'm not even sure what kind of scan that is, or what it's looking for. Were you having a migraine? I get those occasionally - they always start out with visual disturbances, sensitivity to light and smells, and I get really, really dizzy/nauseated.

Our garden is surrounded by chain link, with chicken wire dug down into the ground - to keep any burrowing critters out. We have a big un-finished subdivision development behind us, so we've got a lot of little critters in the neighborhood. So far the worst damage has been from the little birds that keep eating my pea plants. I can't put netting over the entire space (it's about 30 x 50 ft), so I've got it over just a few of the raised beds (peas, and the strawberries). Doesn't seem to be helping much.

Bird-man - our current bushes are actually set between the fruit trees - we have four fruit trees in a row, with our 2 currant bushes between them. I think I'll go get a couple more currant bushes! I'd never heard they help each other out - it is help in pollinating? They've all bee blossoming this week and are so pretty. What kind of raspberries do you have? Ours are Canby, but I'm not too impressed with them. We had Canby's when I was growing up in N. Idaho and they were fabulous - enormous, juicy berries. These really don't make very good berries, in my opinion - they're smaller, not as flavorful. I have a friend here that grows "Heritage" and says they're wonderful - they bear on first year canes, so she mows them entire hedge down every year (no thinning!). The caveat is they have enormous thorns.

My husband raves about a current jelly or jam that his grandmother made growing up. I've never seen current bushes for sell...and wonder if they'd do ok at this atltitude. Hv to research that (IF we can save them fm critters). Where are you buying yours? p.s. His g-ma is still living but I'm not sure she could recall the recipe - she's 103!

They are checking to see if I have any heart damage (it a lovely genetic thing). Lost my grandma at 58 to a HA, my mom's first as at 58 and I'm not in my 50's. I've had the migraine curse all my life and luckily Imitrex works great for me. Before that came on the market my life was non-existance.
