Utah!

Currant jelly is the best! My absolute favorite. I got my 2 bushes at Linden Nursery, here in Utah County. I've seen them at some other nurseries, but never at places like Home Depot or Lowes. I'd check with a local nursery to see if they'll grow up there. I bet they would - they do great here in Highland, I'm at about 5200 ft.

Someone is feeding chicks to a snake?! That makes me sick to my stomach. I'm hoping hoping hoping that Marty's babies didn't go to that guy! I would have taken them if I'd have thought someone would be that cruel.

I hope your tests come out ok! I'm not even sure what kind of scan that is, or what it's looking for. Were you having a migraine? I get those occasionally - they always start out with visual disturbances, sensitivity to light and smells, and I get really, really dizzy/nauseated.

Our garden is surrounded by chain link, with chicken wire dug down into the ground - to keep any burrowing critters out. We have a big un-finished subdivision development behind us, so we've got a lot of little critters in the neighborhood. So far the worst damage has been from the little birds that keep eating my pea plants. I can't put netting over the entire space (it's about 30 x 50 ft), so I've got it over just a few of the raised beds (peas, and the strawberries). Doesn't seem to be helping much.

Bird-man - our current bushes are actually set between the fruit trees - we have four fruit trees in a row, with our 2 currant bushes between them. I think I'll go get a couple more currant bushes! I'd never heard they help each other out - it is help in pollinating? They've all bee blossoming this week and are so pretty. What kind of raspberries do you have? Ours are Canby, but I'm not too impressed with them. We had Canby's when I was growing up in N. Idaho and they were fabulous - enormous, juicy berries. These really don't make very good berries, in my opinion - they're smaller, not as flavorful. I have a friend here that grows "Heritage" and says they're wonderful - they bear on first year canes, so she mows them entire hedge down every year (no thinning!). The caveat is they have enormous thorns.

i cant remember for sure but i think they make each others soil better. we have a mix of raspberries and i know some of them are heritage and i cant say anything bad about them. we love them a lot. i got them from a guy who lives close to thanksgiving point and the guy knows his stuff and he has a huge patch of berries and sells them on ksl a lot. he experimented with a ton of different kinds and found the ones he likes and had them shipped in. hey elkmtn good luck with your heart! heart problems are not fun at all

I'm in West Jordan. Anyone out here? Where do I get started on finding out the laws etc? I was told West Jordan allows chickens and than someone else said that in our particular area they didn't think so, than another neighbor who has them said that if it's okay with your neighbors. We just picked up 6 baby chicks yesterday.

The different stores we've looked at have all said it was 6 hens and 6 chicks so I'm wondering if the law has changed. One store refused to sell us chicks unless we bought all 6 at once. We only wanted 3-4 because there was a chance to get some 3 month old ones from my son's school.

It's so confusing. I've been trying to search the codes and can't find anything other than what was posted here which is over 1yrs old. All the other neighbors that are getting them aren't concerned with permit or codes other than asking their neighbors if they are okay with it.

My husband is on the other computer researching as I type this. I'm about to call my friend who is a West Jordan Police officer but it doesn't sound like he actually knows the codes.

Thank you for trying to help us figure this out.

Where did you try to buy from? I've wondered if there are minimums at feed stores but when the time comes we will probably go through the lady in Pleasant Grove.

Cal Ranch said that he was looking into it for someone and found it was 6hens and 6 chicks. Cal Ranch was awesome to work with but they sold all their chicks before we were ready to buy. We ended up going to IFA which I didn't want to do. The Riverton IFA said 4chick minimum but they didn't have the ones we were looking for. Draper had them but she said it was their policy to sell 6 at a time to make sure you are serious. I told her that we were waiting to find out from my son's school and she said we would have to come back than when we found out or buy all 6 now.

My friend thinks they are just trying to get rid of them and that is why she did that. Also many have told us the eggs are better and it's cheaper having your own chickens and IFA gal told us it does not save economically and that it cost $32/month to feed them where as Cal Ranch said it cost about $100/year for 6 chickens. Hmmmm. We are also doing compost so will have kitchen scraps for them and I will let them roam around when I'm out in the backyard working.

I will keep looking and seeing if there is an updated code on the amount cause when we started looking 2 months ago we were told 5 and 5 and by last month we were told 6 and 6.

The eggs are better, but once you factor in the cost of raising chicks and the equipment involved, plus the cost of a coop, the food, etc it really doesn't pay off for a while. We aren't doing it for the savings, but so we can be more self sufficient.

We are doing it to be more self sufficient, the experience and the no hormones. So far it hasn't been to bad. About 70 dollars for the 6 chicks, storage bin, feed, lamp, clamp, containers, shavings etc. We found a decent coop but will build something better down the road. I think by the time they are ready to go out side we maybe into it $300 (coop was $200.) I don't think that is to bad for something that gives back. The family is loving the chicks and we are looking forward to having them running around while we are working in the yard. I never thought I would like chickens. They just weren't my thing. It's amazing how quickly you get attached. We will be very sad if the ordinance really is only 5. We have 2 of 3 different breeds and they all get along wonderfully.
