Steve:

You may want to call a planner or council person in one of the Salt Lake County cities to ask questions about why they passed the laws here. My understanding is that the initiative started at the county level and that it was passed because there is federal funding available to municipalities who allow and encourage some agricultural uses for the residents.

If you can get to the bottom of the issues with a municipality that has already passed the laws, you may be able to go the meeting armed with information that will push them to pass the laws also.

Maybe there is a chicken expert at Salt Lake County that could give you some ammo?

Crap... can you please try to give her another day? Maybe give her aspirin water for the pain? Animals do not feel pain quite the same as humans, it's a nature defense thing. There was someone on this board that could fix bumblefoot and if I knew anything I would come and help (not that you want me after seeing that Betsy died), but I have seen horses & dogs in pain, but if you can at least stablize her to get her on the right track? Would soaking it in warm epsom or sea salt water help??

An animal in pain is hard to watch, but they can handle the pain if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know this from rescue, so please give her the benefit of the doubt until you know you've done all and there's no going forward.

I guess I just don't want you to feel the same loss as I do with Bets. Maybe look through the posts and find that person someone recommended for me to call? I never did because she started getting better (at least she acted fine and was laying). I can mail off some electrolytes tomorrow if you need, just email me your address (I'm not great at checking PM's.).

I'll be sending good thoughts her way~

i just need my girl to pull through! it looked better today so it is good. don't worry about the electrolytes, i can pick some up. its the same as save a chick correct? for the record i think you did great with betsy and if we lived closer i would have you help because i trust you. i just need to stay positive and with all you backing me i am sure we will get through it all. it means a lot to me to have this much support from people i have never met before. i love you all

the-bird-man,

From what I've read, I think Penicillin is a very powerful & one of the more simple ways to combat Bumblefoot. A small bottle of "short-acting Penicillin" costs about $12 in the frig at almost any feed store (IFA, CAL Ranch, etc--tho I'm thinking Steve Regan's doesn't carry it). You'd need one 16-gauge needle & about five needles about size 20-gauge at 20 cents each, plus 4 or 5 syringes at 15 cents each in size 2 cc or so (Note: cc's are equivalent to ml's). The feed stores often keep these behind the checkout counter but will pull them out & sell them to you when you ask.

Subcutaneous is the method you should use for giving Penicillin to chickens, & it isn't very painful for a chicken to get a subcutaneous injection of Penicillin. It really isn't as hard as our modern cultural norms sometimes have us thinking it is to do. Once a day for 5 days hopefully can create the necessary clearing of infection. I live near the Idaho border, or else I'd be willing to help you give the first shot.

I improved a little of the info in the "Treat with Penicillin" section on my Poultry Podiatry page, & you can email me also if you have any other questions.

Last week, I gave one of our horses 2 "long-acting" Penicillin shots last week for an infection from a cut near his hoof, and it cleared up very quickly & he's fine.

Hopefully this or another treatment will help your little chicken heal. I wish you the best luck!

p.s. Hydrogen peroxide cleans wounds well but sometimes might slow down healing, so Betadine is a more optimal choice.

About halfway down the page at my Poultry Podiatry page at http://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry , there is a section called "Give Injection" followed by one called "Treat with Penicillin" & those hopefully can give good help on technique. I hope it works alright.
As always, please let me know if you have suggestions on improvements for the instructions (or any other part of the Poultry Podiatry page).

Hi! I'm brand-new to this site and to chickens (just brought home the girls last night) and thought I'd pipe up from the Sugarhood (I live just south of Liberty Park). I'm so excited to be one of you! I am expecting to ask lots and lots of questions as I go along...

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone might want a Black Australorp rooster. He is 13 wks and very friendly, but we can't keep him where we live. I am in Logan.

Here is a pic....let me know if you are interested
