Cynthia, Is your hatching guy named Jay? I think he just bought my SFH cockerels. Could somebody please clue me in on Chickenstock? Thanks!

Chickenstock---birdguy is in charge of that from Idaho. It is May 5 at the fairgrounds in Idaho Falls, it is like a big chicken fair!

Donna, I'm sorry about your legbar dying, and that you're not having a good hatch. :-(


Warmblood has one hen and one rooster that she imported. There was another hen, but it got sick and died. So far, nobody is laying yet. I do know that she's buying hatching eggs and incubating them- the day I was there buying my hatching eggs, she received a shipment of legbar eggs. She let me watch her open them and they were purdy.

Cynthia, I think you should definitely go for it.


I want to go to the chicken show. I can't decide if I should go on Friday or Saturday. I've never been to one before (unless you count the state fair), so I think it would be a lot of fun.


I've decided to bring my incubator home for spring break. It's NINE DAYS the incubator would be at the school alone, so I'm just going to bring them home. And then I'll get to candle! I haven't candled this batch at all. YET.

i think you are very smart to take home your incubator, its common to deep clean buildings at this time so it could be unplugged or moved etc. plus i am sure it would drive you nuts not being able to watch them

Hi Brad..how is the pencil doing? Probably don't need to do anything more to the area by now. In fact, keeping it moist all the time wouldn't be a good idea.

Okay, that hatch was a very sad one--total ended up being 3 BLRW's and 1 cream legbar hen. I did eggtopsies on the remainders and was not pleased with that I found. I think the incubator is running too high a temp. The eggs are developing great early on--the first 17-18 days, maybe--then dying. The ones that are hatching are hatching a day early. So I've turned down the temp 0.5 degrees and we will see what happens. I just put my own set of a dozen BLRW's into lockdown (the last batch were shipped eggs). All twelve were moving around actively.

The only thing that is puzzling me is that my own BLRW's have hatched pretty well, but maybe that is just showing the difference in robustness between the shipped and non-shipped eggs. In any case, I still have 9 cream legbar eggs in there that all lokked good today, so I am hopeful.

My oldest son's Breda are doing very well except for the one that had to be intensively rewarmed yesterday. That one looked like he was totally perked up, then failed today. We tried rewarming, but I think that one just took too much damage in shipping and he died a couple of hours ago.

Also, I don't know what to do with the cream legbar chick that has something hanging out of it's bottom. Whatever it is is mostly dried, but definitely doesn't look right. I thought the chick would likely die on it's own (thought it was intestine extruding), but instead, it is up running about like there is nothing wrong. It's bottom looks very unpleasant, but you wouldn't know it by watching the little one. Looks like a girl. I can't imagine that is going to last, but I can't bring myself to cull it, since it is acting so perky. Anyone want a sad looking little cream legbar girl? I have no idea what to do with her!

she is doing well, its scabbed over and looks better. i do not know if feathers will ever regrow but i am okay with that, i have a few parrots that pluck so this would be nothing. the buff is doing well too, she always wants to be held and will sit in my hand for hours if i let her.

Aww, little BO's, they are sweet birds. She will be a great hen for you if you keep spoiling her like that. Glad to hear the Pencil is doing well. Have you named them yet?

Ugh, I'm sorry that things went so wrong with your hatch. I'd love to see a picture of that chick you're describing. I love a challenge and would take her, but I won't have new chicks for another 10 days or so.

I don't think they're planning on doing a deep clean at the preschool. The director/owner said she was willing to meet me at the school several times so I could check on them and add water, but I've worried about what if a circuit trips, or the power goes out or.... I'm telling myself I'm doing this for the chicks own good and not because I want them home so I can candle them.
