Okay, so..........Birdguy, how much are you planning on asking for for Icelandics? Because apparently I need to get a couple for birdman, hehehehe. Brad, you just like to watch me squirm, don't ya?

And, look what I got for my boyfriend!

I picked up a pair of Broad Breasted Bronze poults at IFA while I was out getting vitamins for my teenagers. The boyfriend's been wanting some for a while, but hasn't been able to pick any up when Cal Ranch gets in their shipments because he's always working. He's sick today, so I'm excited to surprise him.

I have decided that poults are extremely cute

They're quite different from chickens, too. These ones cry very loudly whenever I walk away from the brooder. Once I show up and talk to them, they settle right down. I had one of them falling asleep on my hand, head hanging against my thumb and all. Tried to get a picture, but it woke up and gave the camera a stinkeye.
I hatched some of these. They are the funnest little baby ever! They were so rolly poly at first. I kept having to set them up straight, because I would hear one of them screaming..I come in to see it on it's back with the legs flaying. I turn it over, and it's making that cute sound they make again. I only had three eggs, all three hatched, and they went back to the guy that gave them to me to hatch. It was a fun experience. Loved their little sounds.

I have really enjoyed the icelandics.. They are better foragers, more consistent layers all winter and are good mothers... just waiting for one to go broody!!!

Red... the icelandics are $7 each... only problem with them is you can't get just one.. they are worse than pringles!! they are like a box of chocolates.. everyone is different!!! I have crests, feathered legs and every kind of comb you can imagine!! Always fun to see what you get and then what they turn out like!!

Sounds like I could go for some eggs from these! To Hatch!

Birdguy, fair warning, I may just ask Lisa to pick up a couple for me. I've loved Icelandics ever since I ran across them several months ago. That first picture you put up of the splashy rooster is mighty fine looking. Good golly, no wonder I had a nightmare the other night about killer chicks. I'll be swamped!

Cynthia, I know!

I have no idea how old these poults are. They're probably a week or less, but they are so cute and mellow. They're in the brooder for tonight with my BW's I got from Lisa, and at first the BW's didn't know what to think of them. One of the poults keeps wedging itself between the food bottle and the brooder wall and falling asleep; the other one was falling asleep on the Wyandottes. Man, they are cute. I'm pretty sure I have at least one boy. The saucy little stink tried biting me. Ah well, just need to learn how to handle them, I guess.

And here's another picture! You guys are going to be so sick of pictures from me, sorry. I was out doing some work in the yard and my BO wanted to be with me, so I put her on my shoulder and walked around and worked while she was on my back. She didn't poop on me once! Good girl!

Kodak moment fo rthis fine spring day!

Some of Zach's Breda and the Younger Cream Legbars...The dark on in front is a Breda:

One of the pretty little Legbar Hens-- over half of the ones I've gotten have been crested nicely!

Blue eggs..Lisa...blue eggs...Lisa.....BLUE EGGS! LOL... Always!

After my experience I'm glad you decided not to move her! Did you figure out a way to keep her safe? Pls keep me posted! Until yesterday I would hv thought Mrs. Meanee Phoebe would have just moved with the eggs but she didn't. Now today she is back in her nesting box, VERY broody and growly. We need falcon gloves just to gather lol.
So all day today I thought about the poor little black feathered chick.... and it got me thinking....

I have some banty EE hens and the only roo in that coop is a banty EE. One of my hens, according to Cynthia, is about as close to pure Amercauna (sp?) as possible. She is blue and meets the std except she is not rumpless. Anyhows, my EE banty eggs are obvious... hers are sky blue and the others blue/green, consistent layers. The only question is if they are fertile because the hens have no "rooster's been there" signs. The blue Amercauna is broody but moves to a roost at night or she'd be perfect. I also have a buff orp that goes broody and nice to gather under, I wish she was broody again (she's one I've moved several times and she just sets up house any place I put her).

My question is/are... Can I save up banty eggs and then put them all under the broody at one time? I keep my eggs at room temp until ready to sell or eat, then they get washed and in the fridge. How many days can they wait before they are no good for hatching eggs? and what temp should I keep them at?

I could put these eggs and a couple marked green full size eggs (what the little black chickie was) under Mrs. Meanee. Then I just let her do her thing? Each day we would gather any new eggs, keep a real close eye on when it's hatch time (which is how long, 21 days?). Once hatched move her to a safe place (and if she rejected the chicks like she did the eggs that's an easy problem to solve). I would probably brooder or sell the banty EE chicks and leave her the EE/silkie chicks for all her efforts.

Does anyone think this plan would work?

All these pics and talk of cream legbars, icelandics (first I've seen!), I'm getting chick fever BAD! There are just so many cool breeds!

Oh and thanks for the good luck on the new job. I worked there as a temp for 4th Qtr last year and now they gave me a permanent FT job! I really like it, day goes fast and it's not a job that "comes home with you". It came at a great time, we SO need to catch up on bills! (but then, who doesn't now? sad).

I will try to get back online and find any answers. MAN this forum is moving fast! I bookmark a page and the next time I look it's 10 more pages to go through! Way cool chicken & coop pics tho. :)

Thanks for any advice! I appreciate it.

that was me with the broody! (figured I'd make it easier for you to spot this post) I haven't tried to move her yet because there's still some debate going on about if it's worth a try or not, but we did find out yesterday that she's sitting on 14+ eggs. I'm 90% sure that the other hen isn't laying any more eggs in that spot, either. It's kind of funny how they trade eggs around like that. Today is day 10, to the best of my knowledge......Almost halfway there!!
