Donna----I got new thermometers for my hatching incubator----yes the other digital one was way too cool so that is likely the culprit of those chicks not hatching.

I am glad I got new ones! I think it worked fine up until recently---it matched my backup thermometer before but this last week was about 5 degrees off for some reason so I did not know which one was wrong . I checked the temp on both sides of my still air for hatching and they are fine, it was my thermometer that was messed up. Sooooooo hopefully better luck this week. Poor chickies were freezing! Sheesh! I have like 6 thermometers in both bators now. Looks ridiculous. And the plug is duct taped to the wall. Two things I have learned. I am sure there will be soooo many more.

Lisa, you don't leave your plug open? If I have two plugs, I leave one open all the time, then open the other for lock down, don't wait for a pip. They have found, that the eggs breath better, the chicks come along better with some air. In fact, a lot of folks just throw their plugs away, never use them. But like I said, I do use one in the double plugged ones. If I have only one in the bator I'm using, I leave it open all the time. You just have to adjust the temp where it will stay up with them open. Humidity, I stay around low/mid 40's for the room they are in, then only up to 65/66 for lock down. That's me, with the wonderful hatch I just went through, but, I didn't tell you guys that I put them in lock down in my still bator..hmmm, not sure I will do that again. Those things hold the humidity like no other! I know I started it out with it way to high. In the 70's..so the goop! I kept opening the bator the firs part of the day to get the humidity down, took a while, then it was down in the low 70's for a while, then the high 60's, finally, got it down to mid 60's. I had filled all the trays. I remember now how that thing held the humidity. Oh well, went into lock down this morning with the last BBS eggs. Hope I get some blues. Then I'll call this guy to come and get some chicks. He lives in Gunnison. A bit of a drive, but he likes driving out here. Has been here a couple of times. I'm not doing eggs for him again though, and I know he will be asking about getting those expensive ones from Florida..100 bucks for 6 eggs! He would pay, but I'm scared to death they wouldn't hatch!

Thanks for the info Cynthia! I do leave the top plugs open, at least one...but I duct tape the plug to the outlet, remember it fell out and my eggs froze? My dog knocked it out because he hangs out under the table where the bator is waiting for those chicks. he totally knows what is going on up there haha!

Well I'm trying to find the post of who had the broody MIA and found her with a clutch and was wondering what to do with her...can't find, SO many posts.

Anyhow's, wanted to share my experience of moving my VERY broody Cuckoo Maran. After I caught another hen crowded in and laying with her I started counting and the eggs were multiplying. So I had no choice but to move her. I moved the eggs first into the sunroom, in a plastic box she's familiar with.

She didn't like that and started a new nest in the dirt in a corner. So being a warm day in there, I moved the eggs there and she didn't go back. Spent the night on the roost.

So I broke open all the eggs this morning. It varied from nonfertile fresh, most nonfertile, to fertile & barely starting, to rotten and then the last egg had one developed chick, I would guess about a wk from hatching.

It was a green egg, black check with lots of feathers. Of course gone now because it got cold. Made me sad but there was no way to know and eggs in so many stages it just wouldn't have worked. Some or all would have died.

I've moved broody hens before but they were cochins. At least now I know even my tiny silkie and the banty EE can do the job if I wanted them to.

I'm off to my new job and will not be able to check posts but I've fallen so far behind in conversations.. :(
Good luck to everyone and ALL those chicky & coop pics gets the chicken math going!

Thanks for all your help!

Good luck with your new job, ElkMtn! Sorry about the unsuccessful move of the broody, that would be such a disappointment.

Cynthia, if he knows that you are going to do your best, but things are iffy with shipped eggs, why not?

Go for it Brad!  Like you said, rare breed, needs some good folks to breed them right.

How are you doing anyway.  I think us gals get to gabbing on here, and leave you out. I love your posts!   By chance, are you noticing any feathers laying around the ground from your Pencil?  I am seeing so many!  My chicks always do that every time when they reach this age.  My black Ameraucana..or EE, or whatever it is now?? lol..is also loosing a lot of feathers.  I am not sure this is a small moult or what, but my chickens have never looked bald.  I best knock on wood!  That Pencil just keeps getting bigger and bigger!  She doesn't mind coming up to me now at all..for treats!

icelandics are not for me but seeing how red wants some i am being a little devil and suggesting she gets some lol. i am doing good, been busy with the yard and dealing with this heat the best i can. it was 95 here yesterday. i got the fan running in the coop now because the girls get hot. i have not noticed any dropped feathers, i have had girls drop feathers in the past when the girls got too hot, maybe that is what your girls are doing? the buff and pencil are super friendly, the buff is one of the most friendly chickens i have ever seen, she will sit on me forever if i let her. when i go to the coop she will stop what she is doing and runs to me to be held lol. i am happy this thread is so active, you girls are great :love

i read a bit about the icelandics and they look very cool. you know its a super rare breed and they do not come up often... i think you should think about it. if you were to breed them you would be doing a very good thing, you know there are not a lot of them out there and you would be helping to save the breed

sorry i will stop trying to talk you into them lol

Hahaha thanks, so no pressure, right?

No I seriously love all the random colors that come with the breed. I think they're gorgeous. Ack! You just made me Google some pictures! How could you do that to a friend? How?

Elk,

that was me with the broody! (figured I'd make it easier for you to spot this post) I haven't tried to move her yet because there's still some debate going on about if it's worth a try or not, but we did find out yesterday that she's sitting on 14+ eggs. I'm 90% sure that the other hen isn't laying any more eggs in that spot, either. It's kind of funny how they trade eggs around like that. Today is day 10, to the best of my knowledge......Almost halfway there!!

Heh, I used to have 6 thermometers in my styrofoam incubator, and I'd watch them like a hawk. Not sure what I would have done if one of them was off a little, maybe swear a lot? Love the duct tape. Sounds like something I would have done.

So whichever time you like on Friday would be just fine. I'm actually off that night (for a change!), so I will be home all evening as far as I know. If anything comes up, I will just leave them for you on the porch, but I don't anticipate anything going on. I promised to take Zach to the reptile show Saturday morning, so we will likely make an early night of it.
