Utah!

My heart is breaking and I'm beginning to wonder if I can hack it being a chicken mom.  I just discovered my little barred rock Wyandotte bantam, dead in her brooder.  There wasn't any signs of distress at all, I never saw it coming.  The little crele roo was nuzzling her trying to wake her and then just cuddled up next to her.  Now he's all alone and is going to cry, probably for days.  WTH? I don't get it. She wasn't flourishing like Clay (the crele roo) was, and he was almost twice her size now.  But I've seen her eat and drink.  Does this happen often?  Is it like SIDS in human babies?   Why is it that I was able to successfully raise freaking IFA chicks and not have any deaths and I've had so many problems with these poor little crele wyandotte bantams?  :hit

That is so sad! Poor baby. Poor Mom. Sometimes these things just happen, don't be so hard on yourself and try not to be sad. Hopefully you will get some cute wyandotte babies here in a week and a half when your eggs hatch to keep the little guy company. Hugs to you hon! :hugs

Oh no! That is strange. Was it acting ok earlier? Maybe it got caught in something? I'm soo sorry!

Okay, prepare for a...........PICTURE OVERLOAD!!

The preteens. Jemma is curious about the camera.

Thelma enjoying the sunshine.

Stevie's making sure I pass inspections. He's so vigilant. When some of the older girls started picking on the preteens, he separated them and chased my gray EE away from the group. Atta boy.

Little bit of a gear shift here - My Marans and her chickies.

This is the one I'm pretty sure is a girl. Anyone else want to chime in on whether they think this looks more like a Marans baby or a Barred Rock?

The turkey butts! They grow very fast.

Yours truly. Man today was a long day!

I need a name for this getup. It has yet to be painted and have a couple of doors put on either end, but for now, it is functional and the big girls are finally in their new pen. Yay!

Thanks for letting me share!
Nice! That is great. Wish I could do something on my own. I help my hubby though, does that count? I got an idea from Lisa with her coop on the other end of her run..so, we put up a real small partially enclosed place for the girls..with a roost, and a long nest box. Now they won't have to fight over one nest box. Not any of them wanted to try the roost, so, I went out when it got dark, and put some of the pullets on the roost. They have to stay there, they can't see. lol.

I candled the dark Welsummers that I was worried about..the unplugged eggs, remember? Well, I do see some development in quite a few of them!

Sasha, I am so sorry

It is so upsetting to lose a baby. I can only imagine what it's like when it was one you hatched. Poor little crele. Are there any other babies you can put him with?

Cynthia, yes, that counts! And I'm glad to hear that the Welsummer eggs are looking alright.

Yay for those pretty speckled eggs Cynthia! I am locking down the Donna eggs in the morning. I have 15 going in......had a few quit about halfway, I think part of it was my fault I unplugged the turner for about 1 day and a half before I realized. But this is the most I have had in lockdown at once, so it is exciting :) They all look good at this point.

Chickpea - Welcome!!

Sasha - I'm so sorry. Sometimes they break your heart.

Cynthia - That's good news!

Lisa - Good luck and happy hatching!

Red - Gotta love a woman who can handle a nail gun - or at least don't p:$& her off!!

Thanks, Cynthia. She was acting her "normal" self earlier. She wasn't caught in anything, she was laying, just outside the heat light circle, belly down, head to the side, legs out behind her. (strange) I still had their brooder lined with paper towels since they are so little, so no bedding to ingest.
She was always kind of a little funny, things we thought were endearing may have been signs we didn't recognize as pending trouble. She often walked backwards, would often "click" instead of peep. She was almost half the size of her big crele brother, (she was hatched 10 hours behind him) and he has fully feathered wings at 10 days and she was barely getting her first feathers on the ends of her wings. It was like she just wasn't developing/growing up like she should. I thought she was just a late bloomer, but maybe there was something wrong we just couldn't see.
Sometimes, with puppies, you will have a puppy that will just die. No outward apparent reason, they just pass on quietly. It's called "failure to thrive", and after mulling it over in my head the last few hours, I really think that's what it was. :(

Today was day 8 for the Cochins and Wyandotte eggs I received from BluJem's neighbors. I candled them, and had to toss 9. :( 4 had a blood ring and the other 5 quit. There's another egg I wasn't sure about, so I put it back in the bator. I know some of the eggs sat more than a week until I was able to set them, so that could be a big part of the problem. Here's to hoping the rest will make it to lockdown, hatch, and thrive!

Hello, new member here! Seattle transplant now living in Heber. Just bought our chicks last week. I'm already enjoying them so much and am so happy to see so many other members in Utah!

I think she has been getting pretty good at that!
Just kidding Lisa...

Sorry about your chick Sasha. I also have some in the incubator. Haven't candled yet, maybe tomorrow.

Thanks, Cindy. My girls were so disappointed this morning. All my eggs except 1 had good veining on day 3. Day 8, not so good. :(

Sasha, I'm so sorry about your chick. It sounds like there was something not right about her. I'm sure it was some anatomical defect, and nothing you could've done. How many eggs did you set, and how many do you have left?

Red, your project looks awesome!!

Lisa, congrats on so many making it into lockdown.

Cynthia, glad you're seeing development in those welsummers.

I candled my eggs yesterday. Only one of my sussex eggs looks good. There's another that I think is an early quitter, but I'm not ready to call it dead yet. The brown and blue eggs look good, and the olive egg is completely opaque. I'm really disappointed with the sussex. I'd really gotten myself excited over getting a couple coronation sussex, so I'm really sad.
