Utah!

Yes, this is Utah, the state in which I was born but have not lived in for 40 years of my life. But I'M BACK!!!!!! So I will add another hen or two when I find the bird I just can't live without.

As long as the weather is cooperative from about 4 pm tomorrow until late evening, our reunion will survive. If it rains, we will have to move it inside the house.

This is the music I was thinking about playing ha ha ha

Speaking of loving some chicken. I need to send a few roosters to freezer camp. Was hoping I wouldn't have to this year but no one wanted these roosters.

Well, I'm man enough to admit that we have too many chickens. It's a sad day indeed.

I think the problem started when we got a broody hen and thought it would be cool to hatch a few eggs under her. We now have 3 pullets and 1 cockerel that need to go. They are crossed with a French Copper Black Marans rooster and a Rhodes Island White hen. The girls have spots and since I've never seen a spotted chicken they must be really rare!  ;)

Should probably let our two youngest Wyandottes go as well since we're over the limit. When we got chicks I assumed one or two wouldn't make it but I'll be danged if they all lived.

I posted them on KSL but will give a $2 discount to BYC members. Here they are:

$7 for the Wyandottes (started laying March of this year)

$3 for the (rare spotted) pullets. Cockerel FREE with Pullet purchase.

I love your wyandotte hens and would buy both the big ones and maybe 1 or 2 small ones only if you lived closer :( But I might be going down your way on Saturday ;) I'll call if I am :)

I had Giardia once---the health dept said it was from contaminated water source, something you get from streams or lakes, or it can get in your well......In my case it was from a camping trip we had been on. My sister got it in India. I have never heard of chickens having it, or dogs or animals spreading it. I will be interested to hear more on this if anybody knows anything?

I also had it once..same reason..water up in the Uintas. Never had a sick dog from eating chicken poo. I've had dogs and chickens for years.

:gig Hey there ya go! Think raccoons make mean drunks? I have been tempted several times to put out a tub of beer so that the snails can have their happy hour, but now I'm worried my girls would eat them and go funny from having marinated food..........I should get some wine that will have that thing laying on it's side and drooling. Can't crawl away if it can't even see straight, right? :D

Rex, yeah, I took a couple of little shortcuts when I was working on our run last week. It still needs some work. I thought I had the chicken wire on there tight, but when I went around and pulled on it the other day to check it, I found a spot where the staples came out easily. I think I'm going to take some screws and install a strip of sheet metal along the edges of the wire now. If I can pull the wire that easily, I'll bet a raccoon would try the same thing. Yuck.

Aunt Hattie, it does sound funny, but I'm still eager to try the Pepsi thing. Nothing else I've done so far has worked. This coon is just too smart. On a side note, every once in a while I'll get a craving for cherry Pepsi. I only ever want a taste of it, and then I'm fine. I don't know why.
from what i have seen is they make happy drunks :) chickens are very angry drunks btw. beer does work great for snails and i know people who feed the beer soaked snails to chickens... i am not sure i would do it tho. but hey let me know if you do the wine with the coon :)

Something is up with the animals today.
First- No egg from HenRee, and the last 2 days I have found them on the floor not the nest box.
2. Tonight they would not go into the coop.
3. the goats are all wound up and not cooperating. Took forever to milk the buggers, jumping around and laying down. Even the kids were all wound up.
I hope it is the weather and nothing too serious.

I have never seen everyone so wound up before. Is it just my animals?

Holy Cow No Egg From HenRee? That would be the first day since August 2011. But....she did do it here on the coop floor and in the run when she geared up with double yolkers a couple of times.

I have one chicken that has gone bezerk and is in isolation, other than that they seem ok. Sheesh I hope we are not in for a big earthquake or something else that they can sense and we have no idea. Hope your animals settle down! Maybe they are excited for the three day weekend :p

My blue eggs are pipping really early though, I have three and they are all bleeding....they need to STOP! They are not even due until Sunday 11 a.m.......so weird. And they did not get too warm or anything as far as I know, mine usually end up hatching a little late because I am paranoid and keep it on the low side. The only early ones I ever had were Donna's but she said hers are usually early too. I just want to tape them shut and make them wait a bit! We tried getting all the lights off to make it dark so hoping they won't want to be so active. Do not know what else to do.

Blu, have you seen any predator activity around there recently? It almost sounds like something is hanging around and it's bothering them.

I don't know why your animals are so wound up, but judging by the way our dogs are mimicking being dead on the floor right now, I don't think it's widespread

My chickens have been pretty normal, too, and so have the cats. Maybe it's something in the water? Hehe only kidding.

Hopefully not beer lol!

Hey Cousin Hattie---any more chicks pip for you? You have to get more than 1 :/

Red---any more of your babies look like roos? How are your ameraucanas looking? I see very faint three row on the pea comb of one of my blacks but no red yet at all so I am hoping. That one does act a little boyish tho....stinker keeps pecking at me when I reach in. The teeny blue one is super sweet and cute, but the tail is coming in slower than the others. Those are the only things I have noticed so far. Still hope on all of them to be girls, but a couple flags I will keep an eye on.

Sphinx--you have been a busy girl! Good grief you will be ready for school to be done. Hope you sell your listing, that would be fantastic!

Cynthia when is your next hatch due? Pretty soon right? What is next for you? I was thinking it has been a bit since you started your Welsummers.

Sasha/T-rex--hope your reunion is all ready to go! Wishing you good karma for happy times over there! Man I hope the weather cooperates. The forecast is looking a little dicey it could go either way.

Lisa, I'm keeping an eye on all three of my Amer's, since it's harder for me to tell with them. I'm still positive that Angel is a girl. Same goes for Thelma, the EE x BO chick I got from Cynthia. I'm thinking that all three of the Amer's are girls, but I'm starting to wonder. My little blue, Jemma, is the tiniest of the whole group, but she's feathered in just as rapidly as the other 'girls' have. Agnes, my smaller black, doesn't have quite as pronounced of a tail as the other two girls, but I'm still pretty sure that she is a she, going by her behavior. Raven, my larger black, is the one that's starting to worry me. She looks very girly, but she keeps trying to chest bump my Welsummer and pick fights with her.

And, as an added bonus, I'm dead certain Steve is a boy, but he's still kind of gender confused in appearance

Remember how he was a tough call as a baby? He's getting his manly traits now, like his curling tail feathers and reddening wattles, but the boy has bloomers! Goodness. He's sure a cute little stink. And very good and breaking up fights. I remember drooling over the blue roo that was his daddy Phoenix and Blu had. I can't wait to see what he looks like all growed up!

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask - does anyone else think it's a little odd that when I let my chickies out to free range, I sometimes stand there with my hands raised and cackle, "Fly, my pretties! FLY!!" while they flap around me?

Nope, not odd at all Red. However, I am eccentric, so maybe you should worry.

Congrats on the chick, Hattie. Hope you get more.

Wow, Lisa, those babies are pipping early. I'll bet they'll be fine

Love the new coop, that'll be nice.

Trex/Sasha, good luck with the reunion. Im down in Ephraim for a family reunion. I'm so allergic here this time of year, ugh.

I got to meet Ilovemyduckies tonight and she got my last blrw rooster. Such a cute girl, and I'm really thrilled my boy's new home.
