Utah!

Yes. The duckling is positioned backwards and is trying to pip on the pointed end. It is very tricky work, but I have successfully hatched wrong-way duck babies. Carefully score shell where the dark stain is, find beak and free beak/nares to breathe. Then once the others have hatched out, you can slowly hatch the wrong-way baby. Good luck!!

Yes, this happens often with the silkies and showgirls. You do as Iain has said here, just take your time through out the day to pick away at the shell. It may take the whole day if you are getting fresh blood. Good luck, hope the baby is ok in there! Let us know.

Oh, forgot to comment on Sasha's post. Congrats on the pips, and I really, really hope your wrong way baby makes it.

One more thing..... duck babies take 2-3 times as long to hatch as chickens, especially if assisted. Once inner membrane is exposed, you can take wet qtip to moisten membrane to see veining better. If beak/nares are free to breathe, I would not attempt further hatching until you see the membrane turn brownish and the veins disappear. Oh... and not sure about chickens (I only have experience with waterfowl)... but ducks need about 80% humidity to avoid the membrane shrink wrapping.

Sasha---Me too I am rooting for you.

You know you have too many chickens, when you put three new ones in the run and nobody notices

I put the three olive eggers out there,I expected the usual chase and peck, but I truly do not think they have noticed yet.....and another thing I just noticed, half my flock will be black now. weird, I did not plan it that way, it just happened :)

I got the newbies all dusted down with DE, to be safe.....decided not to quarantine this time, the birds all look great and healthy where I got them. Giving them the cayenne today to worm them just in case. And the new OE girls are much nicer this morning, must have been scared or something. I was petting all three, no problem. The treats warmed them right up. I had to put my lav in a cage for a bit though, she goes nuts when there are newbies and I do not trust her. Once she gets past the first day she is fine...must get scared or something. I worry if she notices these new ones she will go into fight mode

Good morning everybody! :frow Hope you all have a great day!

Ooo, nice big girls! Olive eggers you say?

The gal says next week, but.....................................................................I got some more showgirl eggs today. All partridge! They will be either showgirl, or silkies...that's how it usually works, unless they have showgirl to showgirl breeding. Most do the silkies to showgirls. I want a partridge showgirl, and a partridge silkie! It better happen, plus I have more showgirl eggs coming from Cj..look up his site...beautiful! When I get the ones I want, others will have a chance to get some, I hope. Wendy, not sure what color of a Silkie you want, but hoping that Cj sends a variety. He has some beauties.
The showgirls are so hard to hatch. Anyway, I should get something out of these two batches..plus, crossing my fingers on the ones to come this next week, they are all white. With muffs, and bowties. :) My new bator is getting tested for sure. I know I can have both in there. When I did my first hatch, it was so nice to be able to open the bator and not worry about shrink wrapping the others. Even if they were pipped. I just opened the bator once one had hatched, and put it in a nice warm brooder. Those were the EE mixes and so called Olive Eggers..the eggs weren't as green as what I am getting for winning the contest. :) (thanks everyone that voted) Anyway, kept one of the blue EE's, just to see how she lays.
Hey! My black Ameraucana was checking out the outside nest box today. Come on chickie ladies.
The heat is really affecting my sexlink. Never thought it would happen. She didn't lay for two days, but oh boy, did she make noise when she finally laid today..the egg was huge! Bless her heart.
