Moriah & Red - Hehehe I know right?! I need to get my hands on a bunch of chicks.

Hopefully I can get my handy friends to help me build the roosts and such, because I'm hopeless with a hammer.

I'm great at organizing and arranging, quick at learning genetics for breeding animals, and coming up with ideas for wooden boxes to house the animals, but I couldn't put together a wooden box to save my life.

I'm a newbie at chickens, but I know I'll be looking for breeds that are cold hardy. I'm still figuring out what type of chicken I like.
I prefer to use screws. You can drill out the hole straight and then drill the screws in, but I hadn't done anything but hang drapes and blinds before we built henhouse. Power tools were kinda fun. Even the circular saw was easier than I imagined. And you can rent a nailgun by the day. I don't know why I was intimidated by them.

I was concerned about "cold-hardy" too, and picked my original flock based on that and mellowness. Now I find that they are more affected by heat than they ever were by the cold. They are holding their wings out to cool off, and walking through mud puddles, and its only June.

I know, does not compute, right?

I think the only reason I didn't give in to temptation is that they looked to be golden laced, and the lacing wasn't very good.

I am so, so, so proud of myself (but I shouldn't speak too soon). I went to the feed store to get more feed and she had TWO gorgeous little polish chicks, looked to be about 6 weeks old, and she offered me a great deal on them because some of the other chicks were picking on them. I said no, but I kind of want to go back and get them.
I'm proud of you too, but I'd feel better about my own addiction if you'd given in!

Isn't someone here hatching some very nice Polish soon?

Thank you, thank you ladies! I did just as Iain said. The baby is still alive!

There wasn't any fresh blood, so maybe the duckling has absorbed it between last night and this afternoon.

We now have 4 pips, and the 1 I scored and gave a breathe hole to. 2 of them have made a couple more additional pips in the shell, but all that have pipped are rockin' and rollin'. :)

Great news!!

Daloorashens--I listed my boy on ksl just a bit ago, so think fast...lol Also I am planning on you taking the third girl. She is already with your Marans and they are getting along splendidly. Marans are a bit bigger than the wheatens. The OE's are out in the main run and coop, there is a bit of chase going on finally, but it is mostly the drama they are making for themselves, nobody is really bothering them but they are skittering around making a fuss, drawing attention....haha drama queens already. The OE's have eaten and had lots of water. The Marans--I put both mine out, one is stressed out and making weird noises, hiding under the other one. The other one is just chilling in the shade with the other one hiding under it haha.
Yours is in the garage with the Wheaten, very happy

Cindy's boy and girl (and wheaten girl and baby marans boy i hatched) are in the garage as well in another brooder, the girl hiding under the boy. These seem to be quite shy. Love people and so sweet, but they seem worried. One jumped on me this morning and would not get off, like "save me from the monsters mom!" The two groups seem very acclimated to each other though, I was surprised how easy it was to put everybody together today, I had anticipated having to make sections out in the run for everybody, but no fighting

just hiding for no apparent reason.
Lisa... you're awesome... but you have to see my PM about the little cockerel...

SPhinx- you resisted??? amazing!!

Can't remember who was hatching the duck eggs, but happy for you that one is doing ok...

Joybells, I'm sure you won't have trouble finding some good chickens when you decide, I think we all have extras we could help you out with, I even have hens that are laying I'd consider selling=)

Ah.. it was you Sasha!! Hope it is still doing ok!!!

Whoa! I've got a few pages of posts to catch up on. Before this goes any further -

Sasha, good luck on the hatch! I hope the babies turn out okay.

Cynthia, your EE baby does have more feathering than mine, but I don't feel quite so worried now. And I get Silkie envy every time I see your splash. Such a cutie!

Joybells, I agree with Moriah - It's such a shame to have all that space (and grasshoppers!) and no huge flock of chickens to help you out.

Did you miss the pics I put up for you??? (Yes I know I'm playing devil's advocate, but what the heck)

Oh man I am getting to old! I try to keep up but when I read so many posts I then forget who said what when I go to post.
hmm.png
So I guess I will write about what I remember and hope I don't miss anyone. Sheesh.
Lisa I really thought you would bring back a lot more chickens from going to that place in Paul,Idaho. The ultimate colored eggs farm! So what was the count of chickens (the new ones plus your own) that you had riding back to Logan? I think you win with the chicken shuttling!
highfive.gif
I'm so excited to see your eggs when they start having them and more pictures of your new chickens.
Sasha good luck on your hatch. Hope the littles make the journey into this world ok.
Cynthia as always your chickens are beautiful! I'm so glad you got more eggs and I'm excited you are getting a partridge Silkies or Showgirls. I love them. Hey keep us updated on your x-ray results. Hope everything is ok for you.
Daloorashens your roosters are beautiful! You are having way to much fun with you chicken gathering.
ya.gif

Sphinx your picture was BEAUTIFUL! It made me miss living so close to Yellowstone. Now I live close to Zion park but only get there about once a year. I need to go more. I guess I could (which reminds me Lisa!)I could just bring my chickens with me. I just remembered reading and seeing pictures of your outfits for you Violet! Seriously this gets me off the hook for being the crazy chicken lady.

( where did you say you got those outfits and do the have banty sizes?)

So today I met two very fun ladies( two neighbors) who live in LaVerkin. I took four of my sweet little Polish chicks to them. I'm excited to see them grow up. So Colsgirls you need to post pictures every so often. If not I know where you live I'll just have to take a drive and come see them. Hahaha I alway love meeting other chicken lovers.
Oh by the way Sphinx I would love to stop on my way to visit and meet you. I'll keep you updated on my trip schedule and see if it works out for you.

Ah.. it was you Sasha!! Hope it is still doing ok!!!
The troubled egg is still doing OK. It hasn't pipped it's own hole yet but it is moving. Not much progress in the other pipped eggs and no new pips, but hatch day is technically tomorrow and all the duck folk say it's totally normal for 24-48 hours from pip to hatch. Like Iain said, it takes ducklings a much longer time to hatch than chicks....so Sierra and I are sitting on our hands and trying to find stuff to keep us occupied!
