Ok so I am heading to Idaho tomorrow and as far as I know I am just bringing cute Polish babies for Sasha and Lisa. Correct me if I am wrong.

Wow, thanks for posting those fun coop pictures..makes me want to put more greenery out back!

Brad, will those blood feathers..ever be normal? That poor chicken isn't stuck with those forever is it? That looks like it could be sore.

for a feather to develop it has to have a blood source so at the blood feather stage its like a straw sticking in a vane so that is a huge danger because if it were to break and still have a part in the vane it can kill the bird due to bleeding to death. so knowing how to remove a blood feather is a must because you may have to do it if the bird cant do it its self. as the feather grows it will not be a blood feather and you will be safe. at the blood feather stage it will be very tender and itchy and you want to be careful when handling a bird with blood feathers. :)

nothing like going to the coop to find the roost covered in blood... one of the girls broke a nail. but hey de is good for stopping blood :) i need to watch their nails better i guess.

Wow, thanks so much for posting those, Happy2BeHere! I loved looking at the pictures and wouldn't complain if I saw more. What a creative use of space. It actually makes me feel bad that I haven't done more fun stuff with the gobs of space I have.

Wait?! DE stops bleeding nails...would it work for dogs? I was cutting the neighbors dogs nails, and got one a bit short. :( The dog did great, I'm sure it hurt, but I felt terrible seeing it bleed for a while. It was a boxer, big boy. What a sweetheart of a dog, not even a grow. She's only had the dog for a week, and she didn't dare cut the nails. I've had them bleed before, but not often, it still makes me feel bad. It's hard when they have the dark nail..can't see the vein. I do my dogs all the time.
What do you mean by, you need to watch their nails better? I haven't ever worried about my chickens nails! Oh dear, something I should be doing?

Wow, I think I saw something kind of like that one the SLW chick I got for my mom. She was pretty roughed up when we got her, but then she started getting those quill-looking things all along her back. She looks good now. Still bald, but much better. I know I've seen those blood feathers on the Icelandic I got from Cynthia, too. She had some around her tail area. I caught sight of them one day and had to pick her up and see what it was to make sure she was okay, because the color startled me.

Happy, thanks for sharing the awesome pictures! It's getting my wheels turning for when I build stuff for my girls. I need to put in a nest box for the big girls in the run - my GLW is actually red in the face, not pink! Yay! And my boyfriend brought me some more lumber today, so I can get going on that second run for the teens. Ah, what a relief.

Hey Birdman, remember those walking onions you gave me? Funniest thing - I "adopted" some stray onions out of my aunt's sidewalk last year and put them in a flower pot in our back yard. I finally figured out why they were such odd-looking onions after I talked to you. They're walking onions!

Hooray! Let me know what I owe ya :) My DH says tonight that they will be his. He is loving the Polish babies. His little Elvis he wants to take to the fair lol I might have to hatch some of these myself.......I am trying really hard to be done! Do any of the babies we picked out look frizzly at all?

Birdman......Oh man! I posted awhile back about whether you are supposed to cut their nails and no one answered----so you do cut their nails? Do you just use the same clippers you do on dog nails? Do you use DE like you do the styptic powder (I don't know if I spelled that right or if that is the right word )

Hey Red what has happened so far about your truck? I have been waiting to hear to see what they do for you.
