Utah!

I do typically think of orange cats as male, but my parents have a female orange. Speaking of old, my childhood cat lived 21-22 years. I was glad I had been moved out a few years when she died, it gave me some emotional distance.
Something happened at my place yesterday. My chicken sitter called in a panic. They were there collecting eggs and discovered one of my polish was outside of the enclosure, and couldn't figure out how she got out. They went to stick her back in and found the other polish laying on the ground, mostly dead but no sign of injury or illness.
I called my chicken neighbor to ask her to check things out. She took thing 2 (I think it's thing 2, the cockerel) to her place overnight and has been giving him water through a dropper. She reported everyone else there are ok
She told me this morning he's still alive, but isn't doing well.
No idea what in the world happened. I wonder about human involvement since Thing 1 got out, and our coop is pretty secure.
I'm really hoping its not illness because at least then I know everyone else is ok.
Hope it gets better and everyone else stays ok....and there is no more trouble.
Bluejems, I love your momma cat picture. It reminds me so much of my 1st cat. She sadly passed at the young age of 13.5 years from bone cancer. But she had a fabulous life and was an awesome girl!
Thanks she is only a year...I have her aunt here too, they look almost identical.
I had no idea! That is awesome, because that is the kind I would like.....and we want a female. I am looking more for one that has the white all over though with black and orange patches. At some point, I know my girl won't be around a lot longer

Sphinx, yours got soooo old, wow!
That is awful about your THING. I sure hope he/she pulls through....you think it just got dehydrated from being out and not getting back in to drink? I sure hope it works out, and wonder what the heck could have happened?
Lisa, You will have to come see them when they get a little bigger. One has light patches on all its toes. I love the one with the orange stripe down its face. They are hard to get good pics of right now.

Most everyone is saying cockerel on the gender thread.  This chicken is about 17 weeks old now.  We were gone most of the day today but there wasn't any crowing yesterday or this morning.  What age do they normally start crowing?  I got him/her from corvidae in case anyone has experience with the coloring on her birds.

My speckled sussex is loud though, bawk bawk baaaaaawk all the time.  It's pretty funny. :)  I love her though, she's the gentlest chicken we have and my 4 year old always picks her up and she just puts up with it without a fuss.

Hmm... Mine SLW cross are 11 weeks and two are crowing. They don't have a dominant roo in their pen tho.

Fingers crossed for you still!

My Sussex is the same way very loud, but I love her pesonality. Not sure my neighbors do! She will come right up beside you if you are down and just talk away. It's the morning time that she is the loudest..she's smart..she's calling me to come open the gate!

Think of the calico cat like a sex link chicken. Calicoes are "always" girls. Orange cats are males more often than they are females. Your tidbit of kitty info for the day. :) Super cute kittens, Blujems.

These are soo cute! Yes, Calico and Torties are always girls. Didn't know about the orange ones being usually boys..come to think of it..all the orange kitties I've had, or my mom had, were boys.

Wendy. Crossing fingers for your Polish. I'm so sorry. Not something you want to have to worry about while you are out to have fun.

See that little guy is not only crossing fingers, but saying a little prayer too. :))

Since I'm going to Logan tomorrow, does anyone want me to bring chicks for them to look at. I have Frizzled Americanas, Olive eggers, Rumpless and rumped Aracuanas, Sizzles both frizzled and smooth coated. Every one of the babies is very healthy, Teenagers I a Silver laced Wyandott pullett, Black Cochin bantam pullet, Barnvelder, I also have a clean faced Lavender Americana Roo that Cindy hatched. I have him here breeding my EE. I also have an extra blue Langston that is a teenager. It is a pullet I bought two pullets from Arlene in American fork, I only need one

Sphinx, that's awful about your Polish

I wouldn't be surprised if that was from human involvement. Did Thing 2 have any kind of wounds on him, do you know? My boyfriend has some neighbors in back of him who aren't very kind to animals. They've messed with his horses and such several times, and if I EVER catch them doing anything to the animals when I'm there, I'll let them have it!

I worry that it might be a predator hanging around your coop, too. Please, no! I'd like to think I've done enough time with predators this year to cover everyone here.

Lisa, you want a tortoise shell kitty! Those are so pretty. I wanted one very badly when I was a kid. Then we had a calico adopt us and have a couple of litters of kittens. The one I kept looked part calico, part tabby, and she was the best mouser ever. Sorry, little trip down memory lane there.

Sundance, have you ever heard of how once in a great while, a calico will actually be male? (not arguing with the female-only rule. I just found it interesting) I guess it's a rare genetic thing, but I think the male will be sterile when that happens. When we had kittens way long ago, one of the calicoes actually had half boy parts, half girl parts, so she was automatically sterile. Our neighbors ended up taking her, and she was the quietest, sweetest little cat.

Aaack! Not Thing 1 and Thing 2! I love those two little guys. Sphinx, I wonder if perhaps when one of them got out the other one was pacing so much trying to get to the other that he overheated. Between the stress and the heat he may have just collapsed. I hope he makes it

Lisa, the one that was outside the coop is fine. When they went to put her back in is when they found the other.

I also have to think the two incidences are related....maybe thing 1 got out to go find help for Thing 2. Or thing 2 went crazy seeing thing 1 out. So sad, I hope he is ok when you get home, and I hope you are still able to enjoy your time and not worry too much.

Sundance you feeling better? I sure hope so. :hugs

So Red, the toroise shell is what they are called...i did not know that either :p That is it then, the toroise shell is what I need to look for. Big patches of orange and black and white. They are so cute, I think it is the Tolbunt Polish on the brain that makes me want one, that is when i started thinking about it! haha!

My Zoey laid another blue egg today. Finally. She laid one a few days ago then no more until today. What is that about? My Aust. started one day and has laid at 10 am everyday since. Dang small, but everyday. So now I think that black and white EE "fatface" might be next. She laid in the nest with my Australorp the whole time she was laying her egg today. And the Aust. complained and yelled about it the whole time. Seriously, why don't they just go use another nest...I will never figure out why they all want to be in the same one! I still have 6 more squatting and no eggs yet. They are so stinkin noisy. I have the lav, GSL, BSL, White Rock, Squattie the EE, and 1 Polish. They are all over 20 weeks, up to 26 weeks. Patience is so hard to have right now! Then I have 4 more over 20 weeks not squatting yet.
