Utah!

Wow, I can't believe three yolks in that tiny egg.

Cynthia, I'd love to see pics of your frizzle.

Lisa, how was your son's scout camp?

Red, very exciting that you got a new layer!

I saw Sundance at the cat show. So many beautiful cats there, but of course her Sphynx cats were the prettiest.

I got another marans egg today. Totally chocolate egg. I need more marans, those dark brown eggs are just sooooooo amazing to me.

Cynthia, Eek! The 24th is soon approaching. Hang in there, get lots of hugs while you can :)

Sphinx, Scout camp was short....he came home before noon and was freezing lol, he said they did not get too wet but did not do much fishing so he was bummed. Needed to get a warm bath to get him back to room temperature. Hooray for chocolate eggs! My hatchery girl's are not as dark as I am hoping for from some of my other girls, lots of speckles but not too dark overall. I am sooo excited for them to start! I really like the dark brown too :p How old is yours do you know? Do they lay early or late compared to others? Your egg will match how you will look after your race. Be sure to get some pics for us!

Hello my chicken friends!!

I'm so sporadic with my posting here that I'm still a stranger lol but I thought if anyone would know you guys might. This past spring I bought 3 french standard black copper maran chicks, straight run, supposedly from the Bev Davis line. We drove 90 minutes to the gentleman's home & paid $8 per chick. Sadly we lost 2 of our 3 chicks. Our survivor is beautiful, she's huge we thought she might be a roo at first, beautiful green sheen on black feathers, feather legs & feet, very sweet, but she lays light brown eggs that is maybe only half a shade darker than her sisters who lay the standard brown eggs. For those who have BCM's will her eggs darken at all as she ages? Or is she just a light egg layer & maybe this guy wasn't so honest with us & she's a mix. I was so looking forward to a rich chocolate egg :( My next goal after raising some chocolate egg layers is to raise some blue or olive green layers, but now I'm thinking ksl isn't the best place to buy chicks from lol Maybe that shoulda been obvious

Hi Gypsy! Good to hear from you. I have a question about your Marans - How often does she lay? I have read that with Welsummers, the more often they lay, the lighter their eggs. And the poorer of a layer they are, the darker their eggs will be. I think this rule holds true for Marans, because I had a cuckoo Marans that laid at least four eggs a week, but her eggs were extremely light. Marans' eggs also tend to lighten with age. So, it's kind of an odd deal. Either you get very few chocolate eggs, or you get lots of pretty brown eggs

Ahh! Well that would make sense then. She lays a lot of really nice, big, eggs, around 4 or 5 times a week. Her eggs have been big right from the start too, which I was always impressed with! So perhaps that's why we aren't getting the chocolate eggs. I appreciate your insight!

Gypsy--I would stick with recommended breeders from BYC to be safe :) My two cents. Pawtraitart has beautiful dark laying birds, she sells in the Spring...that is where mine are from....also Sphinx got some from Suzie at River Rock Farms....I think that is in Ogden. Sphinx has a rooster and will have fertile eggs in the Spring to hatch... There are people here in Logan and in Idaho Falls that have the birds from Pawtraitart and will have hatching eggs in the Spring also, I think I will hatch some chicks too. So they are around for sure if you want more, you just have to let it be known :p

La Casa de Pollo I have been off of BYC for quite a while now and dont really remember all the new stuff. Is the list of reccomended breeders a "new" thing or did I just not realize it was there before the change? Thank you for any help.

Pure BCM's can lay a lighter egg every once in a while (as if their paint jet ran out of paint), but in general, they should be on the dark side. However, if the breeder crossed two very different lines together (pure BCM...but different), then you can run into a problem with the genes responsible for dark eggs not lining up properly in the offspring. That is why it's important to test breed when introducing new stock to an established line. Wait for a week or so, however, and then see if she's just slow to get her paint system going. :)

Maybejoey I do not know of any "list", nothing formal. I was speaking of just the recommendations I see on here from people happy with their chickens/chicks :)

I try to buy my little babies from people that are recommended on here, I trust the opinions of fellow BYC'ers for sure! It just gives you a place to start headed in the right direction. If one posts on here what they are looking for there are several people that have hatched so many they know where the good stuff is :p Which people's shipped eggs have had better luck, which local people have sold birds that turned out really nice/really not so nice, etc. I know I have run into a few places I would not buy from again....and some that I think have birds to die for!

Sphinx, cannot wait to hear your mud run went! Hope you made it through safe!

PICTURE HEAVY :)

Mimi--got those pics of the Polish. The SL is Definitely going to be a boy I am afraid. One of my white/black crested looks boyish. The other two look pretty girlie still. Cynthia, got a pic of the NN in there if you want to peek and compare....

Hello wattles! Boy.

He sure is going to be pretty though. Best feathers and coloring of the bunch. Big too. If anybody wants him holler! He is going to have to be on KSL.

See up there on top of the nose? Just turned red this weekend. And I can see some big ole spikes in there..

The black/white : (boy?) They are smaller wattles, but look redder than they do in this picture...and there are spikes...

The last two looking girlish: My buff laced. Wild hair, hoping it gets more uniform, the SL had picked on it a little but it is coming back now. her nose is still yellow all the way up

She is posing! on the right. And on the left--you can see those red spikes on the nose of the black crested.

This little on has no red at all either. Her crest is actually very blue not black. Kind of dark here, hard to see it.

Cynthia-here is Larry. ( My son named him/her I think it might have jinxed it! lol) I am hoping a girl, but feeling pretty skeptical!

Ok this last girl is my Delaware. When she was a baby, her feathers had lots of specks and we were worried she would not feather out too nice...but she really has, so wanted to share her growing up pics :) Pardon all the white powder, the girls got dusted today and it is EVERYWHERE including all over me haha :)
