Utah!

My legbar hen doesn't seem to be personable- she's very flighty and not terribly friendly. She's a decent layer- 4-5 eggs a week, and a good 50+ grams each time. She just doesn't seem to have the personality some of the other chickens do, so she's not my favorite. The rooster seems like he takes good care of his girls and hasn't gotten too aggressive with us yet.

thanks for the info. i know i could of just searched online for others opinion but i wanted to hear from someone that i respect a lot :)

One of the breeders that I am getting my legbars from says they are her favorite birds, very friendly and lots of personality... some people think you can breed personality in/out of the birds, so it might just be the bird Sphinx has... Some people haven't had good luck with orpingtons, either, and they're supposedly the most popular chicken breed.. so I guess it just depends??

I got picture of the week!

This honestly made me laugh out loud. Thank you for your support, everyone. Well, so you all know, my BF has been in the final stages of a nasty divorce for the past year. That's why I couldn't see him for a while. The divorce is final as of friday, though they will settle some money things at a later time. I understand that there was some hubbub behind the scenes about a proposal or something (I made Lisa spill the beans) No proposal, but I don't doubt that it will happen at some point

I'm just happy that I can see him again. And, before you worry, this divorce was something that was going on long before I came into the picture. I'm not a poacher, lol.

Madchicken, it sounds like you have a good rooster, if he's breaking up fights. My EE roo just kind of stands to the side and watches it play out. He's hen pecked

Hopefully your girls get it sorted out soon.

Sphinx, Houdini is such a handsome boy. Consider me jealous of your new roo.

Dalooras, I have to wonder sometimes if the chickens don't pick up traits from their handlers, too. For instance, my birds are crazy. Even Lisa agreed with this (she got to see some video of them) Now, I'm not necessarily crazy, but quirky, yes. Sooo.....

Whittni - YAAAY!! Congrats! Your cornish sure is lovely with those colors. And now I know what "POW" stands for, haha. I've been trying to figure it out for a while.

Lisa, thanks for letting me drop in for a minute to visit with you. It was so fun to see another friend's chickens and just gab for a while. Just so you all know, Lisa is the sweetest host you'll ever find. She pulled out the cheesecake for me and made me feel special, and her house is so cute!

I really should go catch up on the pages that I haven't read, now.

Sundance, glad you liked the chicken soup. I purposely picked that for two reasons- it's good for healing and the idea of it made me giggle a little.

Red, I'm glad you got good news yesterday!

Cynthia, good luck with your broody. I can't wait to hear how it goes.

I got roosters swapped with Sundance yesterday. Houdini, as I've named the new cockerel looks like he'll be a gorgeous, sweet boy. I put him in the hen house last night after everyone was settled in, and nobody noticed. This morning, I went out to check on him. I wish I'd brought my camera, it was so funny! My black copper marans hen was in the nest box, trying to lay, and he was crammed in there with her. She looked so annoyed, like "geez kid, give me my SPACE!!".

In other cool news, I think I got my first egg from Shirley, my mutt chicken. She was an egg I pulled from my friend's "eating" eggs basket- was a medium brown egg. She looks like she's either a black sex link, or possibly a welsummer/black copper marans mix.

Here's a picture of the eggs I've collected so far today. Shirley's (?) is the one marked "mutt".

Edited to add: It's kind of interesting and stressful to watch the chickens establish pecking order, isn't it MadChicken? I never know if it's good to intervene or not, and I just hope nobody gets hurt.

I am glad hes with you wish I could have seen your hen, The soup was awsome we ate it for two days and loved it. Love your eggs. I forgot to show you my egga oh well

We've started using our broody for hatching. We did one hatch this Fall and we're hoping to do more this Spring. I know that we can buy fertile eggs from Thanksgiving Point, and they've told us that they'll have brown leghorns this coming year, but I was wondering if anyone on here keeps roosters and would be willing to sell some fertile eggs.

We are in north Utah county.

Thanks!

I plan to have some Icelandic eggs available in the spring. There's a chance that I will also have some blue/black/splash Ameraucana's, and some easter eggers out of a purebred black Am cockerel, too.
