Vaccinate? Opinions wanted.

Thank you very much for your input. It's a shame that such a disease exists. Although there are many that plague the avian species. This one just seems rather nasty. But again thank you for your Input! I take everyone's opinion into hand. Either way it seems there isn't a definitive answer for this one. And is solely up to the flock master. :idunno:oops:

In flocks with Marek's disease present, their are choices; either give up on chickens entirely, buy only vaccinated replacements and have them isolated for three weeks to develop protection, and/ or cull sick birds, and keep the healthiest individuals only.
Marek's does NOT transfer to the embryo if incubator hatched, and EVEN NPIP sources AREN'T required to report if they have Marek's. The government doesn't consider it a threat to our national food supply chain. :hmm

I guess I fall in the category of only keep healthy birds and cull the weak. If I see lash eggs or other symptoms of something not right... it's time to go, period. I won't allow slow death here. Lot's of un-vaccinated babes get raised by broody's here as well. And I guess since ALL are not vaccinated... according to your theory they are ALL canaries in the coal mine. :)

I do consider myself to be "someone who deals with Marek's". Awesome to see many different takes on the situation. :thumbsup

VERY personal choice. :fl

I don't vaccinate nor buy chicks that are vaccinated.

I'd also like to chime in and say that each state has different requirements to be a member of NPIP and in a lot of states it is nothing more than testing for PT...
Pullorum typhoid.

Indeed many takes on the situation. It's a little stressful tbh.:thalas from what I'm gathering is that sick birds have to go in order to protect the healthiest. And I do want to have a broody raise chicks. My old flock my mother had raised chicks all the time I always looked forward to those little peepers and the mamma showing them the ropes. I'm certainly leaning twords not vaccinating and just making sure they are up to par (immune system) and keeping the coop as clean as possible even though I know they can certainly still contract the disease. But none the less a flock master father to be can only hope for the best :fl

I wonder if people who are against getting their chicken vaccinated are also against getting their children vaccinated? Thoughts? Who here is against child immunizations and chicken vaccinations...
That's a good question I'm also curious. I had my routine shots when I was born exc. But I was never taken in for any flu shots, or in middle school i didn't get my MMR's. My mother said she did not vaccinate for whooping cough, in fact she always mentioned she never even heard of whooping cough ever up until the late 80's early 90's. Anyways I'm rambling. I maybe be partial to getting some for my children but their booster shots. It just seems like every time someone gets the chance to stick a needle in your child or you it's like your safe now until the next go around. In fact in college we were studying this HPV and my professor divided us up into two groups and said one needs to stand by and defend this, the other against. It was pretty crazy to see the facts people brought up. Anyways that's. U two cents. I dont think I'd pump my child up with every single shot they waved in your face. :)

Really it depends on the vaccine. :old

My kids and myself are vaccinated against things like measles, mumps, rubella...

But NO my daughter is NOT vaccinated against HPV and nor will family get yearly flu vaccines.

My dogs got their initial series of vaccines against Parvo virus... as it is VERY prolific and deadly. They don't go to public places during the period of time it takes the vaccines to become effective. But they do NOT get yearly boosters. And YES they are all vaccinated against Rabies because it's the law... BUT would I do it if it weren't?? I'm nit sure.

My thought is... each situation is different and you should make appropriate choices for yours... based on your take and understanding. :)

I don’t vaccinate-and while I’ve had a share of health problems (very minor luckily!) I’ve never thought about it or worried.
