Vaccination

I think you would be able to in theory... mainly broodiness is just hormones. I would wait for further replies however.

If you are considering vaccinating via drinking water, then I would have thought that the volume of water drunk by a broody hen may be so limited that the vaccine may not be effective

I would be inclined to wait until the chicks are of an appropriate age where they too would benefit from the vaccine. Vaccine schedules are available online - at country or regional level.

Hello BYC
I have to ask that can I do vaccination broody chickens?
Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

What are you thinking about vaccinating for?

The only ones I know of are Marek's and Cocci. Neither of those will benefit or be effective for a hen. If you wish to vaccinate the chicks, it must be done very early after hatch in order to be effective.

Vaccinating for cocci is completely irrelevant IMO and can be avoided by ensuring no one is able to poo in the water and the bedding is kept dry. The vaccine is also rendered useless if they are fed medicated chick feed.

If you are asking if there is a way to stop hen from becoming broody.. the answer would be not really other than providing cruddy living conditions, and I don't suggest that. The other option is to replace the bird with a breed that is generally less broody. As another poster mentioned, it is completely hormonal. However, many of us who do not want our hens brooding will "break" them. By locking them away from their nest. I use an open bottom kennel during the daytime for containment. And an elevated wire floor kennel for night time, making sure there is no bedding material for them to cozy up on and try to keep an egg warm. This is *supposed* to help cool their bellies and help the hormones pass.

Hope this helps. :)
