My turkey eggs are due to hatch in a couple of weeks. They are narragansetts and will be pets only.

I am thinking I need to vaccinate my poults for fowl pox and mareks since we have had both diseases in our chickens in the past year. I'm I right that I would vaccinate them for mareks on day one just like chickens are?

I've read to vaccinate the poults for pox at 8 weeks of age but what keeps them from getting pox before 8 weeks of age?

Thanks!

Turkeys dont get mareks(natural immunity), so you wont have to vaccinate them for that since the mareks vaccine for chickens is made from turkey antigens.

Learned that after the hatchery and the vet laughed at me when I asked them if they mareks vaccinated the turkey poults too and not just the chickens....... that was about 10 yrs ago...... sheesh time flies....

Not sure on the pox one, never vaccinated anything for that.

Well, that is interesting. The few places I read said that the turkeys rarely got mareks but that they could get it. Either way I probably won't vaccinate for it.

I still think I should vaccinate for fowl pox so if anyone can tell me at what age that would be great.

Thanks!

I have not used it yet but this WILL be used by me next year - had an outbreak of pox in my turkeys this year and it is rough.

This is a day 1 vaccine (label use is for chickens but a few others have told me it will work on turkeys as well)

and it is recommended to vaccinate again at 8 weeks with

I am going to vaccinate my poults at day one and then again at 8 weeks with the other vaccine like you mentioned. I figure for the day old vaccination, I will wing stick them like it says to do for chicks. I've read that for older poults it is recommended that the thigh stick method be used. Have you ever heard of using the thigh stick method for the 8 week old vaccination?

Thanks.

Yes I have heard the same thing as by the time they are 8 weeks old they sleep with their head tucked in. If you do it on the wing this could give them pox on their face which is what you are trying to avoid!

So do I use the same type two prong stick used for their day old wing stick for the thigh stick too?

I was just wondering about this. We just did our chicks. Now I want to vaccinate the turkeys. I read that one should vaccinate them in the thigh. Do I use the wing web needle for the thigh? Is there a specific location on the thigh to inject?

Well we went ahead and vaccinated the turkeys this morning. We used the two prong needle in the turkey's thigh in the area of lose skin .I hope it is was the right spot.
