NZer's often refer to themselves as Kiwis after the flightless bird found only in New Zealand. Kiwis, the fruit, were originally known in NZ as Chinese Gooseberries, however China had a bad rep internationally back then so when we started exporting the fruit the name had to go.

NZ is an english speaking country, originally settled by pioneers from the British Isles mainly. It is still part of British Commonwealth.

As for my avatar, which, thanks to Miss Jayne I was able to upload, is my Aussie Shepherd, Fuzzy. Interestingly I had never heard of Australian Shepherds when I lived in New Zealand! Come to find out they're an American Breed. Who knew.
