Vasline questions this is not an emergency

Where is here? It never got above 14F today. Wind came up about dusk. Pretty cold then. Supposed to be -20F tonight with wind chill even lower. Funny thing is we used to have -40 when I was a kid. In the '60's. Yes I grew up in the "60's and I remember it. But wind chill was never mentioned. So I don't put a whole lot of stock in it. Coop is closed and my four birds will do ok. I had them out a few weeks ago at -9F eating breakfast. They ate fast that morning. They all went to bed tonight with full crops. That will keep them warm too.

If you ever get concerned about Vaseline you can always chapstik combs as well. My rooster gets that instead, the Vaseline gets on his cheek puffs somehow but chapstick does not...plus it makes him smell like cherries which is really nice.

Thanks for the advice. Last time I did cap stick orchid took a bite out of it. I'll give it a shot tho

Thanks. I really try hard with them. I honestly think that galaxy is a jersey giant because howbig she is. Carla and comet are fat... Both are 6.6 rn.... I was trying to put them on a diet to lose a pound but I guess that's not happening since it's gonna be in the teens for the next 2 week's. By the way what do ur gals and roos look like

I did a type of experiment. One winter combs w/Vaseline then next year no Vaseline. Not any difference. Except the chickens were cleaner without it.
If you’ve got a chicken eating feathers (which is easily impacted in crop) I’d suggest giving her protein treats chicken meat, tuna. I’m assuming your feed has at least 16% protein right?

Galaxy may be a Jersey Giant, it's hard to tell sometimes.
What is the color of the bottoms of her feet? If the bottom of her feet are a yellowish color, then JG. If the bottom of the feet are white or pinkish white, then she's a BA

Yeah that is what I usually do she must have a really high metabolism then.
Orchid eats almost anything she once tried my hair but realized it tasted horrible

@Yuki do you only feed at certain times of the day or do your ladies have feed available free choice - do they have a feeder with feed in it?

-2F this morning. They ate outside. I've been keeping them inside with both door open to the coop so they can come out if they want to. Been windy a couple of days here. So they look but they won't come out. Today they were cackling so bad that I took two of them out and put some food down for them. They started eating but as I was trying to catch the other two the two outside flew back up and got back in the coop their choice. Three eggs this morning. Was about -10 over night. One egg had just cracked. One of the small Wyandottes eggs. They were all up and about in the coop waiting on breakfast. I usually get out there about 07:30 but slept a little too long. We're having a heat wave. now it's -1F. supposed to be 16 F to day. Heat wave for us.
