Vegetarian & Low Carb Recipes And Discussion

WTG!!

I have an awesome brownie recipe that I make using oatmeal flour (grind quick cooking oats in a blender) then add just a little bit of unbleached unprocessed regular flour or you can just use all oatmeal if you want to - and Splenda.

I'll have to dig it out for you PC, especially if you're craving something sweet. It tastes almost like Devils food cake, its not a chewy brownie, moreso a cakelike one, but it works for me! I had to make them all the time when my SIL was into weight lifting and body building competitions, she drove me insane with "make me some brownies!"

GREAT JOB everyone!!!

Happychick, I was never a South Beach fan. The fat levels are too low, the carb levels are too high, and they rely on too much soy...which is a real weight loss killer.

HennysMom, some people can do flour...some can't. I am in the can't category. It effects my blood sugar the same as table sugar...even whole wheat. Flour, whether bleached, whole wheat or not, is still a highly processed food unless you grind it yourself.

The reason many wheat products are fortified is because the process used to make the products destroys any nutrients in the grain to begin with.

I have not seen that put into words before, but it makes total sense to me. I've had estrogen driven disease for most of my life, and I am definitely affected by soy. It makes sense that something that affects hormone levels would affect weight-loss.

I'm always disappointed when I find what I think is a great recipe to try, then find out it has soy flour or soy protein powder in it.

Wife,

Yeah I know - thats why I use oatmeal. Or - as I said for those that want to they can add just a little flour to make them lighter. Its not necessary as all you need to do is add a little more levening agent and sift the oat flour and they'll be just fine

. My hubby is the same way you are - he see's a processed carb and his blood sugar rises sky high - I swear! LOL

That's why I have to stay out of the cereal isle and the bakery section! LOL

This is an interesting thread. I'm eating a high-carb, low-fat diet and am losing wieght better than I ever have before, without any cravings. I've tried the no-carb and low-carb thing, and my digestive system cannot handle all the meat and fat. My skin, hair and nails don't like it either. I'm eating a mostly vegetarian diet, with little added fat. I'm eating lots of fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains. Please don't all gang up and tell me I'm killing myself with carbs; I won't believe it. It seems like food sins are the worst these days, and I'm not looking to convert.

I think there is plenty of research to support any diet you might like to choose. Bottom line, to lose weight you need to eat less and exercise more.

God knows it sounds easy enough. How hard it really is can be seen in the number of different kinds of diets, gyms, and the diet section of any bookstore.

Bottom line is that if you find something that works well for you, then more power to you!

I am definitely not eating "a lot of meat and fat." I think that's a common misconception people have when they hear "low carb," though, that it's some kind of crazy bacon and pork chop diet.

I have added in more healthy fats, in the form of coconut oil, ground flax, more salmon, etc.

ETA: I'm actually drinking a berry smoothie right now, that I blended a spoonful of coconut oil into, just to try to get in more of that good Omega-3 fatty acid profile! Blueberries, strawberries, key lime juice, stevia, water, and coconut oil. Hmmmm....maybe I need a little rum?

I feel the same here. Whatever works is ok with me.

One of the most important aspects of any diet is you pay attention to
the foods you are eating. Once you start doing that, regardless of the
diet, you will eliminate many of the things such as processed foods and
transfats that don't fit into any diet. A side effect is usually reduced
caloric intake.

I'm not watching calories at all. I'm just watching what I eat and trying
to balance out carbs, proteins, and fats.
