I think that raising one's own animals for consumption does not support animal cruelty. Vegetarian foods are not as green as you may think, it is not so cut and dry when you consider the processing and refining that soy and tofu goes through to turn it into a fake meat product. Also, each soy and tofu product comes in layers of plastic packaging which gets thrown in the trash along with all the other garbage. The production of plastic is highly polluting in itself. Soy is chock full of estrogen and has been linked to early breast caner in women, and hormonal problems in both genders. The farming of soy and tofu involves high use of pesticides unless it is labeled as certified organic. Forests are cut down to make room for soy farming, in fact soy farming comes close to beef farming as far as destroying forests for farmland.

Vegetarianism can be a great thing but I don't agree with the fake soy and tofu products. It can be difficult to get a good enough protein source, and we are physically unable to produce our own protein which is why humans are omnivores, just as some animals are herbivores, and some are carnivores. You can get good sources of protein by eating things other than soy and tofu. Red and black beans, lima beans, eggs. In fact eggs just may be the best and easiest way to get a great complete protein source (we all have chickens here, don't we?

) Beware of believing everything "green" products claim to be. There is a dark side to all things.

From one vegetarian to another,congrats!

It is nice to hear so many reasons for going veg as well as support from non-veggies. Food choices can induce some really strong resposes from people-it is nice to see everyone respecting each other's choices.

The only advice I would give is to really educate yourself, as people out there will challenge your decision almost every day. If you are informed, these challanges can be good opportunities to educate people about the rationale behind your decision (note; not try to convince them to do as you do, just to get people thinking about the food choices they make). I think if the majority of people knew what many folks on this site know, they would not head for McDonald's so quick!

Love your post!

I was for 3 1/2 - 4 years. when I was 14 my dog was killed and I needed a change. I never liked meat much growing up so it was easy, until I met my best friend who is a true cowboy. one day he took me on a long long long trail ride and slaped some chilli down in frount of me, and that was the end of it. my family was much more supportive then I would have thought.

heres to you

Honestly, I couldnt do it. I guess I shouldnt say couldnt, but I wont. I love meat and believe it was put here for us to eat. But of course, that's just one man's opinion. I wish you luck with whatever choice you make!

Yes the hardest thing to give up in the meat department would be crunchy munchy chili at school.

It probably didn't start tasting like meat, until they added a bunch of manmade chemicals to it, to fool you......I know a vegetarian, and she looks like the average, obese American. Calorie intake and the act of digesting roughage, should keep you skinny.....As far as I am concerned, processed agribusiness, garbage in a box, defeats the purpose.
Just quit consuming processed anything, and your life will be healthier.

Edited, to add: When you grow you own soybeans, and make your tofu, by hand, then, you'll have bragging rights.
