Vegetarians ( and Vegans ) Thread!!!

You do know that it was most likely unsweetened? Unsweetened yogurt is supposed to be bitter. You can put honey or sweetener in it. I use stevia, but if you think greek yogurt tastes bad you most likely won't like Stevia. I gotta disagree, I like a good greek yogurt better than ice cream. :)
I don't want to discourage you but it is gawd awful.

It is VERY bitter! I initially thought that I had picked up the wrong container. I had to read, read AND re-read it over and over again to make sure that it was in fact Greek Non-Fat Yogurt. And it was.

I would rather eat my chicken's lay pellets then to eat that stuff. YUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!
My taste buds must be different because so many people give it rave reviews, which is why I decided to try it. I'm so glad that I only wasted $1.00 on this crap. My customer review for this is that I am VERY disappointed. I will never buy this again nor will I recommend this to anyone.

Ok. It didn't say on the container if it was sweetened or unsweetened. All of the yogurt that I have eaten taste sweet. This was so very different. I have tried Stevia but I didn't like the taste. My sweetener of taste these days is raw honey. I think I'll try to find another type of healthy yogurt that I can eat. I like to mix my flaxseed, granola cereal with my yogurt for breakfast.

Yes, the junk food 'fruit on the bottom' yogurt has a lot of sugar. So that's why you probably thought the unsweetened yogurt was bitter. But seriously, that's what yogurt tastes like before they put sugar in it. :) :)

Hungry Girl just did a thing on this today.. see if this works:

WOW! I had no idea. Thanks for educating me on this. And I am guilty of eating the junk food ;fruit on the bottom' yogurt for years. Looks like I need to get my taste buds in gear to eat the healthy stuff. I love the Hungry Girl website. That's one of my favs. I will read the article right now.

Looks like I'm on a journey to eating healthy yogurt. May the forces be with me. :/

Quote: I do not personally eat low-fat or no-fat yogurts.

I find them to generally have an unpleasant sickly sweetness to them if a sweetened variety, and to be unpleasant in texture. Plus, you are cutting out all the CLA and other benefits from milk fat. I accidentally bought a low-fat version of one of the yogurts I like, and the whole time I was thinking, "why is this so terrible tasting"...then I saw the label. XD

You also have to watch the 'Greek yogurt' label. Many kinds are nothing approaching traditional Greek yogurt. Non-fat 'Greek yogurt' doesn't actually make any sense to me, as it is traditionally much higher in milk fat than other kinds. It is a strained yogurt, so it does have a different texture than the sugar-loaded big name yogurt brands one sees at the grocery store. Bulgarian is my personal favorite because it has a smooth texture, and it has a tanginess to it that is heavenly. I fully recommend sweetening it with honey, fruit, etc though, as it seems to only come in an unsweetened variety. This is another yogurt type that can deviate heavily from traditional forms. Actually, most dairy products that have a long history make me cry when I taste the typical derivatives we tend to eat and buy in the US. Feta cheese is one example. I'm so used to the dry, crumbly, bland stuff you find in deli sections. Recently, we found a place that sells it how it should be made...with blends of sheep and goat milks. Oh...my gosh. It melted on the tongue and was packed with flavor. It actually kind of ticks me off that we are marketed such crappy products posing under names that they have no right bearing. I had a similar experience with pita bread a few years back. X)

I make my own 'greek' (strained) yogurt - dunno if it's technically 'greek' but it sure is yummy. And I do make it nonfat sometimes - if I choose to make it nonfat, I add milk powder to the milk before putting into my maker. Full fat will set up without it of course, and tastes a lot yummier. :)

kuntrygirl - if you find the strained/greek yogurts too tart, perhaps buy unsweetened organic 'regular' yogurt - will come in a bigger tub - and sweeten it yourself. It will be less tart and more the consistency that you are used to, but lower in protein. Still better for you than those 'sugar with yogurt cultures' containers that the stores call yogurt. :)

Oh and don't throw it out if you hate it. My chickens love yogurt. :)

I surely will try the unsweetened organic regular yogurt. Oooops, I forgot about the chickens. Thanks for reminding me about that. I am taking it out of the trash right now to feed it to the girls later today. Well, it was in the trash in my office . I only had a few pieces of paper in the trash. :)

Does anyone eat Greek Non-fat yogurt?

I do not personally eat low-fat or no-fat yogurts.  :sick   I find them to generally have an unpleasant sickly sweetness to them if a sweetened variety, and to be unpleasant in texture.  Plus, you are cutting out all the CLA and other benefits from milk fat.  I accidentally bought a low-fat version of one of the yogurts I like, and the whole time I was thinking, "why is this so terrible tasting"...then I saw the label.  XD
