I got mine and he sure tastes good!! Had some for dinner tonight. He was living on an island eating fresh grass and farmers corn fields, not gamey at all. I'm in love, can't wait for next year!
I've wondered why they don't extend the deer gun season in Ohio for 2 full wks? With all the deer/ car accidents now and the damage that is being done in urban areas, instead of having professional hunters come in to thin out the herds, if they extended the open gun season more would be taken and the deer wouldn't be pushed to live in the cities. I do believe one year they did extend it for 2 wk, but not now any more. I know there is a 2 day gun coming up , but how can we get more gun time?
I usually get one or two a year, but I haven't had time to go this year. However my 14 yo has killed 4 so far, he goes every weekend. He has gotten 2 does, a 3 pt and a 6 pt. Says he is saving his 2 remaining tags for big racks! LOL

Gotta love Ohio bucks.... I have passed on three different bucks this year that are frequent visitors to my stand in daylight hours. A nice basket 8, a small 6 point, and a fork. However if I don't see some does by mid January I might just have to take one. I love deer meat and haven't had time to go this year as much as I wanted to. I like to let the small ones go too because if I'm hunting for meat there are plenty of does... let the small ones grow. The bad thing is the bigger they get the smarter they get
We get 3-4 white tail every year and make link sausage, breakfast sausage, jerky, hamburger, etc lol. The area our lease is on also has axis deer which have no limit and TONS of hogs. Needless to say, after the first of the year our 2 freezers are stuffed with meat!
I have 3 sources that trade me venison for eggs....my brother, neighbor and uncle. But my father has an orchard and complains that the deer comes @ night and eats the oranges and told me I could get DH and DS to kill a few. Well its time. I have been hoping that I could stop buying beef alltogether if I have enough venison.
I don't send anything to the butcher. People that do that here, spend a lot of money. To me that cancels out the financial reason to hunt. I have seen my brother-in-law spend over 200 on processing and packing a deer. I just cut the whole thing up in stew meat, except the ribs and I boil the bones down to make soup.

Here in Ohio you can take 6 deer 3 with bow, 3 with a gun..thats not counting all the urban deer you can take. Try a cross bow, bow season is 4 months.
My DH and I have taken 4 so far. 3 Bucks, 1 Six Pointer, and 2 Eight Pointers. I also took a parrot mouth dry doe earlier in the year. We have made jerky, breakfast sausage, roasts, stew, meatloaves, you name it!! We live off the land as much as possible and this year we lucked out getting our 4 early. Best of luck to the rest of you!!
To the poster who said they used to be against hunting: Me too! But thats because the person I knew that hunted, only hunted to kill the animal. He didn't like venison
I didn't like the idea of the animal dying and going to waste! My hubby starting hunting recently and I am his personal cheerleader now hoping each year he gets one!
We take as many as we can get tags for, which has only been 1 a year thus far. We know we will use the meat and there are family members always looking for venison! I'd love to get enough deer this year to replace our beef costs, but I doubt it. Hubby got a buck this year, and we got some decent meat in the freezer. Would love to see him get one more, so we can screw around with making sausage and such. He saved a bit of meat for jerky which we love. Lots of roasts, lots of stew meat. Going to grind some up for burgers too. It takes me a bit to get over the gamey ness of venison sometimes, but the more I eat it the more I like it!
