VENT about eBay & PICTURES!

This is a common comment here and frankly it astounds me. I can pretty much guarantee you that every single person who sells an egg on Ebay is a member here. They might not be active, but it takes about 2 min to register, and there are what 30,000+ members here?

I've bought eggs here, and had pleasant experiences, but in the end ebay is a much safer place to buy because it is a site for buying and selling, not for chatting. It is set up so that the seller has recourse.

Every serious breeder that I've dealt with has sold on ebay or eggbid even if those are not the places where I originally contacted them. And I know for a fact that they have all been members here as well. This is not to say that there aren't scammers or amateurs selling eggs on ebay. I know people wh have had their own pictures stolen and used to sell eggs on ebay.

BUT

If I was going to run an egg scam, this is where I would be selling.

I agree wholeheartly with you Rootball! Just because someone belongs to BYC doesn't mean you can just assume they are on the up and up. There are people on here I would buy from in a heartbeat, and others I wouldn't trust for nothing. This person is a member here and has sold eggs here. It needs to be buyer beware no matter where you're getting your eggs or birds from.

The other thing I would mention about this person is.......(and I dont know the entire situation)

Maybe they dont have a camera.

Maybe their birds juts look bad right now

Maybe theyre just lazy

Maybe she has great birds and good conscientious shipping but is using a picture she found off the web. Sure its bad....but that might be the limit of her transgression.

I think there is no excuse for using some one elses pics. I always use my own even when they dont look as good, or after it has just rained and they are not as nice looking. I mention that and I know it may hurt sales a bit but i never want to mislead anyone. I have gotten a few lousy batches of mis-represented eggs and it stinks.

All we can do at this point is... all chip in and buy the eggs, have one person hatch them and raise the, then we can see if they bear a reasonable resemblance to the birds in the photos. I donate $10 to the effort, someone else will have to hatch and raise them.

We know that this woman is a member here. In 6 months when the evidence is grown, we can have a trial by her peers.

I hear of so many problems on ebay and so few here on BYC. I, of course, do my homework before I buy from someone here as everyone is usually nice enough to give feedback.
It isn't only eggs that are falsely advertised on ebay and they do have a bigger audience and that is probably the reason for so many scammers. They sell where they know they can get away with something, though I hope most get caught.

She
is getting good feedback and 2 buyers have followed up to post that they are getting 90-100% hatch rates so at least we know she is shipping fertile eggs....also has good shipping and packing feed back. Maybe ill get in touch with the buyers who list having eggs hatched and see if we can get some baby pictures and updates as the chicks grow.

edited to add: one person purchased blue orp eggs from her batch on the 9th of may. They might even be big enough to look at.

I don't think this thread is about whether her eggs are fertile or not....it's about the fact that she was using a picture from a UK breeder's site as her own and not saying it wasn't her bird.

I have used someone elses picture 1 time with my ebay ads but I noted it in the description and added a pic of my birds as soon as I got one. BUT, let me tell you what happened to me. . . . I met and became friends with a lady on ebay and we began to swap eggs. Well, she had one of my little blue oeg eggs to hatch that she just loved and bragged and bragged to me about it. She even sent me pictures of her! A beautiful little blue oeg hen with perfect show quality color and body type. All of a sudden, I stopped hearing from her and a couple of weeks later - an ad popped up on ebay with a picture of this little hen claiming it as the offspring of her birds. She was selling eggs on ebay and using a picture of a bird that she hatched from my eggs. I had the parents of that bird - no way that little hen was laying at 2 months old. After that, I started researching her ads and she was using pictures from everywhere on the internet. I have looked for her lately and can't find her - either she's been knocked off of ebay or changed her name.
