Vent gleet and this thing???

@Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock
I just got home so I didn’t see her all Sunday and this morning.

She didn’t eat or really drink any water in my absence but she’s active. I cannot see her vent at all really since the prolapse is covering it, the prolapse is pretty firm and hard and she pushed back when I push on it.

Im giving her an Epsom bath right now, I’m a bit nervous of what else I am able to do for her. I’m not confident of doing the other things just yet since I’m not sure what’s it is and I don’t want to make things worse or cause her pain.

Thank you for your guidance.

Poor Girl!

Can you tell if there's an egg or lash material in the prolapse? Since it's hard, that may be the case.

Separate her out so the other hens don't pick at that and flies don't get on it. Keep the tissue coated with oil, honey or ointment.

The crusty material will be hard to come off, it can take days for that to slough off. Just keep it coated.

Often, they are unable to retain the prolapse, especially if there's an egg or it has the white crusty material, so do the best you can but sometimes pushing back in doesn't work, you have to wait for swelling and inflammation to go down.

Be sure to give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily this will promote healing and retention.

The article you found is pretty good, if you follow that it should be o.k. If she tolerates the soaking, that's fine, but if she gets stressed with soaking, omit that part.

Is she able to poop?

This thread is from a while back, you may want to read it, her hen took a good while to heal but she kept on going, it can be a process.

Actually after her bath it shrank and became soft I was able to push it back in a little bit but with the crusty material I did not want to try to push it further.

I’ll have to check tomorrow for the egg or lash material but I don’t feel anything “egg” hard around the area (I’d appreciate guidance on how to properly check, she’s never laid before and I’m afraid she didn’t have the proper nutrients in the first place, I tried looking online on how to check but I’ve mostly found huge eggs that are obviously sticking out in the prolapse 😅)

I was giving her monistat 7 for vent gleet, should stop applying that at this point and just use a lubricant?

And do we think it’s still possibly a cystic right oviduct?

She has been isolated, pooping and the calcium D3s finally came in. She is also good with soaking and even closes her eyes, it makes me feel better knowing it comforts her.

Thank you so much for the thread! Now I know how to give her the calcium and it felt reassuring to read someone who kept chickens longer having a similar issue and similar feelings 😅. I’ll update tomorrow afternoon/evening.

I’m really learning along the way since these chickens just ended up with me unintentionally. I have been interested in chicken keeping but I was planning on having chickens during my retirement and that’s quite a bit off!

The Monistat probably won't hurt, but if you have an anti-inflammatory ointment, mineral oil or raw honey, one of those will help with the swelling a little better.

Sounds like you are doing good. A prolapse can be difficult to deal with. You definitely feel bad for the hen and just wish it would heal up quickly. Sometimes it does, other times it can take a while.

Do the best you can and keep us posted.

Thank you I’ll be sure to get some anti inflammatory/mineral oil

positive update already!

Everything looks normal now??!! Even the smell went away! I’m so surprised it just all went back in even with the crusts I saw yesterday?? It’s been 6 days since the issue started on Thursday.

I tried to give her another epsom salt bath. She was okay soaking 15-20minutes but I think she knows she’s better and hopped out after 7 minutes 😂

Ill continue to keep the area moist with and oil or ointment but I don’t know if I should continue the baths even just for 5 minutes.

She is eager to get back with the flock. If everything continues to go well this week I want to put her back with everyone else on Friday or Saturday.

I’ll update when she is back with her flock or if something goes awry.

But thank you so much and @Eggcessive too! I wish I could send you both a token of gratitude. There’s so much information out there it really would have been more stressful and overwhelming without your directions <3

If I wasn’t so tired I’d be jumping with joy and my hens improved condition 😅

Oh good!
I'm glad it went back in and she's doing better.

I'd keep an eye on her for sure, it's possible she may prolapse again when she lays her next egg.

If possible, I'd give her Calcium for a total of 7days to help with retention and healing.

Soaking is not needed if the prolapse stays in, so give yourself (and her) a break.

Nice job taking care of this lovely girl.
