Vent prolapse in 2 yr old hen.....Urgent

She's not going to choke on the pill. But you can cut it in half or maybe even get it a little wet so it will slide down easier.

For the next few days it's not too much calcium. I'd keep giving calcium until her shells are normal.

I use the ointment which is like vaseline instead of cream because it lubes better and tends to stay in netter. And you, I put a big blob of it inside the vent when I put the prolapse back in. Sometime I will hold the prolapse in place for a few seconds.

Chicken swallow much larger things than pills. In eighteen years, I've never had a chicken choke on a pill. In case you haven't noticed, chickens have no teeth. That's because they swallow food whole and their gizzard "chews" it.

She's panting from stress and pain. She has another egg coming. Provide water for her to drink and quiet so as to reduce her stress.

I don't have the ointment on hand, is there anything else I can use? She is pooping, but its super liquidy and along with poop comes a lot of liquid. what happens if she doesn't pass it by tomorrow

She is completely ignoring the water, I tried shoving it in her face just in case she didn't notice it but she's showing no interest..I don't want to force her. Instead I've been giving her juicy/liquidy foods with high water content such as watermelon and zuchinni (don't know how to spell that😅)....Should that be good? I haven't seen her drink at all unless she is when I'm not watching...When she poops there is A LOT of water that comes out with it. Does that mean she's hydrated or no?

The fluids you see are mis-directed from the ceca (where cecal poop comes from.) Normally, the ceca distribute fluids around the hen's body, but when the oviduct is blocked, the fluids are all released out of the cloaca. This dehydrates the hen. It's dangerous, and at some point, it may be necessary to tube water into the crop. The more dehydrated she becomes, the harder it gets to pass the egg as membranes shrink. Consider your hen to be in a medical emergency. Yes, if it goes on too long she could die.

What you can do is put a teaspoon of sugar in one cup water, dip her beak to show her it's sweet, then hopefully she will drink on her own. The sugar will give her a glucose boost and energy to keep her going.

You could try some plain vaseline. My hen that had a prolapse also laid a soft shelled egg. It's hard for them to push that out because when their muscles contract the egg just squishes instead of moving. So it's a lot of work. Those eggs and probably the next few with harder shells will not be as smooth as a perfect egg. So the vaseline should help that slide out with less strain on the prolapse.

The watermelon should help hydrate her and give her some energy. it's good she is still eating something. If she won't drink the sugar water.

Yes, she is refusing the sugar water no matter how many times I dip her beak in it...Should I keep giving her watermelon then? When should the next egg pass? Her soft shelled egg passed at around 4-5 o'clock yesterday, but today, nothing. Her prolapse keeps coming out over and over when she is straining no matter how many times I push it back in....

Try not to panic. It can take a couple of days to get a prolapse to stay in. Especially if they are laying soft eggs. Keep offering the watermelon. Take a break from trying to push it in. Sometimes even if there isn't an egg coming their vent is quite active. But eventually the prolapse should be smaller and stay in for slightly longer periods of time.

It took about 3 days for my hens prolapse to totally stay in.

Ok phew that made me feel better. Is it bad though if the egg doesn't arrive within a day or more? Her prolapse is staying in for longer periods of time so that makes me panic less. It is redder than before though🤔😬

It's never good for an egg to get stuck. I think it's just taking longer if it's another soft egg. But goo that the prolapse is staying a little longer. That's how it generally heals and eventually stays in place. Do you know for sure if she is an every day layer?
