Ventilation In Metal Shed Coop

What did u insulate it with? Regular insulation or what? Just trying to think what is best for the chickens! We do plan to use wood everywhere on the inside, like basically cover the walls with wood, should we put regular insulation between the metal and wood??

yes, put the insulation between the metal and the wood.

You can ask at your local store what would work best.

Do remember that you want to close up the between space very well, or the insulation will turn into a rodent house.

20s is NOT that cold. If you close up every opening in the winter your chickens will get frostbite and respiratory illnesses. All you need in the winter is to make sure that EITHER vents are only on one side of the building, OR all vents are up high above the head height of the chickens on perches.

Both above choices will result in no breeze at the perch, great ventilation, and healthy chickens.

For the summer you might actually WANT a breeze over the perches, because I think your area of the world is both hot and humid, a bit of a breeze would help the chickens cool off.

oh... you do get cold enough that WIDE FLAT perches are a good idea to keep the feet healthy and free of frostbite. .. so, the wide side of a 2x4 is good.

what you insulated it with 1½" Styrofoam covered with veneer and what were the problems In Canada I am subject to -40º temperatures in winter which results in condensation and the metal shed becomes supper hot in the summer without insulation.

My metal coop is barely insulated with R-1 fan fold under the metal. Just protect it from the chickens, or they will eat it. It acts as the vapor barrier and provided some insulation. I added (4) 24x36" windows, plus build in (22) 4x11" eve vents. Since the pop door is inside a fully enclosed run, it stays open. That is an extra 12x15" of ventilation.

We actually put the thick plastic around our coop this year also! We already have one coop but are adding to it with the metal building. We learned a lot from the one we have now. What they like vs. not like. Nice coop! Thanks again
