Venting about Roosters

Well as far as baby chicks they all get a good life at my house until processed of course, maybe that is worse, they do have sweet voices with me as getting ready to process, some times they have had a bit longer life because they sounded too sweet to process at that moment.

I have seen a lo

There are a lot of concerns about chicks hatching out of eggs when you have a rooster. I have two roosters and I have never had a chick hatch without me knowing. The only way you can get a chick out of an egg is if you incubate it or allow a broody to sit on it! There has to be perfect conditions for a chick to grow in an egg.

Why are people getting straight runs when they know that they could get cockerels, but don't have a plan to get rid of them? Why aren't people buying point of lay pullets (POL) or hens if they are not allowed roosters/cockerels?

Neutering a rooster/cockerel or trying to make a rooster not a rooster (using collars or other means) will never work and can injure them! If you are not allowed to have a rooster/cockerel nothing will change the fact that it's a rooster/cockerel!

If you do not have a plan to get rid of cockerels, don't buy them! If you cannot rehome them, eat them, or find a solution... DONT BUY THEM!

Don't buy an animal and try to change what that animal is because it will never work! You cannot buy a dog and convince it that it's a cat! You cannot disguise a dog as a cat! You cannot raise a rooster/cockerel and make it think that it's a hen! You cannot disguise a rooster/cockerel as a hen, it will always be a rooster/cockerel! Roosters/Cockerels will always have some sort of aggressiveness, sexual behaviors, spurs, ect... You cannot change that! If you do not like how a rooster/cockerel is, do not own one or have potential to get one!

People who keep animals that they are not supposed to ruin it for others!

COMPLETELY AGREED! IF YOU WANT TO KEEP CHICKENS AS PETS GET THE PROPERTY YOUD NEED TO SUSTAIN THE ANIMAL SUCH AS YOU WOULD TYPICALLY DO FOR A DOG OR CAT OR EVEN A HORSE I READ SO MUCH NONSENSE ABOUT PEOPLE IN SUBDIVISIONS ON SMALL LOTS WITHIN CITY LIMITS SCRAMBLING TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE A ROOSTER A HEN AND THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE TRYING TO JUMP ON THE CHICKEN BANDWAGON FULLY UNPREPARED AND UNIFORMED . ITS ABUSIVE TO HAVE A 1/4 ACRE LOT WITH 10 CHICKENS ON IT THESE ARE FARM ANIMALS/LIVESTOCK NOT DOMESTICATED PETS !!

When I first got chickens I let a lot of people sway how I felt because so many people were calling me mean because I wasn't considering them pets and we wanted to do meat chickens. So many people see livestock animals as pets when that was not their purpose on this earth. They're there to give us fuel to live. Whether it's eggs or meat...

I agree with most of what's been said. I ended up with 2 cockerels, but I can have them where I am, even though I'm only semi-rural out here.

I could never kill a chicken, nor do I swat at mosquitoes. I don't eat meat. It's a deep religious belief I have that all life is sacred.

I think different perspectives are awesome things to behold. I agree that roosters should be roosters, but I can also see the perspective of others who maybe wanted pullets but got surprised when they heard crowing. Likewise, I can see the viewpoints of naive folx who don't realize what they have gotten themselves into. I doubt either of the latter two groups mean harm. There is something to be said for that, I think.

rehome a rooster if you a:can't actually have a rooster or b: don't want a rooster . if you are so "considerate" of the roosters feelings or it's future life you'd rehome the roo not derooster him by any means possible. I personally do not and will not kill my chickens. I know where the food comes from on a store but I also do not abuse animals and crow collars and neutering a rooster is inhumane and unnesseccary I understand some get chickens for meat as well as eggs from There LIVESTOCK that's sensible and understandable they do NOT however put collars on a rooster to be punished for being a rooster! I understand chickens are cute anD most have quirky personalities that make them loveable but if you cant have it or don't want it GET THE ANIMAL A NEW HOME!
