Venting -- Postal Service lost my chicks

Pics
I'm not a fan of wet...wetting down the coop in this type of heat is perfect breeding grounds for coccidia.
I only wet down the outside of the coop -- the exterior walls and the roof -- to get evaporative cooling. Inside stays dry. Don't want nasty stuff growing in there !

Does anyone have a good idea on how to remove the leg bands that are on two them? I want to get those off before I give them to the broody. Nail clippers?
If you've got those special little scissors designed to clip cat (and chicken) toenails, those are small and sharp enough to get under a chick's band. If not, clippers should work, but be careful that your patient doesn't wiggle!

I know I’m a little late to this post but I wanted to let you know that I also had major problems with Sacramento when we ordered our chicks from Hoover’s in February. They wouldn’t update the tracking and lost the chicks in the warehouse. On the 3rd day of not getting them we went to our local post office in Newman to ask for any help they could give. They told us they would make some calls.

About 3 hours later they called us to let us know they had the chicks. One of the postmen actually drove the 1.5 hours to Sacramento to find our chicks and brought them back. We were so grateful for or local post office for going above and beyond.

I’m glad all of your chicks made it! The stress of waiting for them is the worst.

That is so awesome by your local post office. The local postal people seem like they are pretty good. They live in the community and know and care about the people and their livestock. My postman has chickens himself and was immediately concerned and tried to help. That Sacramento warehouse seems like a big mess.

Yeah it’s the one and only time I will ever order chicks through the mail. No point in trusting them anymore.

Sadly, I agree. The Sacramento warehouse is a hub that serves the entirety of Northern California, so there is no avoiding them.

I'm in a bit of quandary with my meat chickens. I really, really like the quality in Jenx hatchery and I've ordered several times without incident. It's a bigger, harder to lose box of 30, very tough chicks, but now I'm totally scared.

I'm hoping the final chapter of this chick saga goes smoothly and my broody hen accepts all the chicks. At 3 1/2 days, they are a little older and bigger than I would have liked, hopefully she is still fooled. She is a first time broody, but is over a year old. She has been incredibly diligent brooding her 4 ceramic eggs for these last 18 days.

Am waiting until 8 p.m. tonight to do insertion. :fl:fl:fl

I've given 7 day olds to a mama, though she had hatched her own that day and the older chicks followed the younger chicks' lead. I've had 5 day olds take to a hen.
