Venting, which for me doesn't come easy Update 11/14

I teach at a university. At the beginning of the school year we were told the university had to cut about a million dollars off the budget. Now we're being told we must cut an additional $3.2 million. That would be $4.2 million cut right now, not next school year. They've already cut all the extras (well, except the football team, of course). THey are now talking about cutting personnel, including tenure and tenure-track faculty. Ack! That's just our university. There are a number of other schools in the system and all of them got hit.
How does the state not know they will be short by millions and millions of dollars when we start the school year? That was only two months ago!!

WHAT??? you're not state employees in NM

In MS all state funded schools are governed by the state, DH is a state school employee

Dallas, TX ISD was 64 million dollars short of their budget for the year in Sept. Initial estimates of layoffs was around 1,000 from both teachers and support staff. I didn't follow the articles in DMN daily, but think they actually laid off around 275 teachers, reassigned teachers to different schools, etc in mid-Oct and then shocked EVERYONE by posting 60 teacher positions for hire the following week. The laid-off teachers could apply, along with anyone else who is interested!
There seems to still not be a certainty that the system is going to be in the black; seems I saw an article saying the state board hasn't yet ruled out intervention.

Hopefully, your district will be able to resolve the problems without too many being affected.

Blossom, my AP's daughter is a teacher, a new one, and got caught up in that. It was a big mess, they reacted before they knew the extent of the situation.
Ours is an ongoing problem that should have been caught years ago, and I'm wondering when the state will step in and demand an accounting. They state needs to come in and check bank accounts and personal accounts etc.
When they start removing light bulbs in classrooms to save money, that is ridiculous. I thought it was a rumor today, but then I got it in hard copy. It's true.

I agree that the state needs to do audits NOW. How much are they really going to save by removing light bulbs? Good grief...

but they have yearly contracts you can't be cut before your contract is up and they are signed six months in advance. they did stop the taking home of company cars, and started a "buddy" system which cut gas use in half, saved 3 million this year and the yearly raise

I've always wanted to teach in the dark. Maybe if I'm really lucky they'll give us slate boards and the kids can write on the backs of the coal shovels we'll be using to heat the portable this winter with!
